Dimitar Berbatov reveals his top three career goals
Dimitar Berbatov has admitted goals he scored for both Manchester United and Tottenham sit among the three favourites he scored in his career - but believes one of his famous Champions League goals has been "underrated" through the years.
Berbatov, speaking on behalf of Enterprise Rent-A-Car and exclusively to 90min, was looking ahead to former club Bayer Leverkusen's UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg with AS Roma on Thursday night with fond memories of the fixture, after scoring a memorable lob at Stadio Olimpico for Bayer in 2004.
The former Bulgaria international scored in a 1-1 draw in Rome, with no crowd present on the night, and created the goal himself through some all-time classic Berbatov skill. Faced up by defender Traianos Dellas, Berbatov flicked the ball into the air, backwards over his own head and that of the opponent's, before lobbing the goalkeeper.
Answering the silly question 'do you remember that?', Berbatov retorted: "Do I remember that?! That's in my top three!
"That goal against Roma was one of the most beautiful goals I ever scored. It's a bit underrated to be honest. It was a long time ago and the stadium was empty, but at the same time when people ask me about my goals and what do I like about them, I always say that goal in Rome.
"If you didn't watch it, go on YouTube and check it out, because it was a moment of magic.
"Before the game I was telling everybody in the dressing room 'I'm going to score today!' - so when I score, you follow my lead and we're going to wave to the empty stadium like there's people there! And they were like 'alright, Berbs, alright...'.
"In the game I scored and I was waving to the guys 'come with me now!' - it was a great goal."
Two other pieces of wonderful skill typical of Berbatov completed his top three of all time, with the overhead kick in a 3-2 win over Liverpool for Man Utd featuring - as well as an incredible individual effort against Charlton for Spurs. He spoke to 90min about each of his former clubs here and here.
"People always remind me of the goal against Liverpool, the bicycle kick, and I always think yes of course - it was such a good goal," he continued. "Though the most important goal in that game was the third one, because it was the one that won the game and the most important.
"But if I'm picking three - I'll say that against Liverpool, the one against Roma, and one goal against Charlton, where I turned around with the ball, flipped it out around the defender and went on to score."
Dimitar Berbatov and Ben Foster featured in Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 2022/23 UEFA Europa League campaign content, 'Mission Masterclass’. You can view episode two in full here.
On this edition of The Promised Land, part of the 90min podcast network, Scott Saunders and Rob Blanchette discuss whether Alejandro Garnacho should be handed the club's number 7 shirt next season, and whether Marcel Sabitzer or Adrien Rabiot should be signed.
