Edwin van der Sar 'not in life-threatening danger' after brain bleed

A statement from the family of Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that the Dutchman is no longer in life-threatening condition as he continues to recover from a brain bleed.

Van der Sar was admitted into hospital during a holiday in Croatia on Friday and has remained in the intensive care unit ever since, with a previous statement confirming he was in a 'stable but concerning' condition.

Fortunately, it appears as though the former goalkeeper has seen his condition improve as the latest update from his family has revealed doctors are confident Van der Sar's life is not in danger.

"Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable," the family said. "He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop."

The update comes shortly after Van der Sar's agent admitted he was confident the former Fulham, Manchester United and Juventus goalkeeper would recover.

"He's in good hands. Annemarie [his wife] is there with her son. There is continuous contact from the Netherlands about how to proceed," Rob Jansen told the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast.

"He needs to rest very well. We are confident that this will work out, but it is not small. A brain haemorrhage is very serious. She [Annemarie] had it herself in 2009. She recognises a lot of what happened to her then."
