England 1-0 Romania: Player ratings as Rashford penalty gives Three Lions turgid friendly win
By Max Parsons
A second-half Marcus Rashford penalty was the only goal in the game as England beat Romania 1-0 in their final Euro 2020 warm-up game on Sunday evening.
Despite a timid start to proceedings, it was Gareth Southgate's men who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes, with both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho striking the crossbar.
The Three Lions eventually found the opener on 68 minutes when Jack Grealish picked the ball up on the left wing and surged brilliantly into the box before being clipped from behind. Captain Rashford stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past Florin Nita to make it 1-0.
Southgate's side were given another penalty when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was taken out by Vlad Chiriches in the area, but the returning Jordan Henderson saw his spot-kick saved fairly comfortably.
England held on, however, and eventually saw out a 1-0 win in their final preparatory game before they kick off the Euro 2020 tournament against Croatia in a week's time. Now, let's see how those Lions rated...
ENGLAND PLAYER RATINGS
1. Goalkeeper & defenders
Sam Johnstone (GK) - 8/10 - His distribution was shaky, but he remained solid whenever tested and looked comfortable between the sticks - notably making an unbelievable stop from Andrei Ivan in the second half.
Ben Godfrey (RB) - 6/10 - Rarely got up the right flank and never added much when he did. At times left some space in behind but stayed strong for the most part.
Ben White (CB) - 6/10 - Showed good composure on the ball, often playing out of the back with good effect and was assured in his defensive work without being tasked too heavily.
Tyrone Mings (CB) - 5/10 - Seemed to be lacking focus from the get go and was caught out several times. Would have been hard to guess which was the more experienced centre-back if you didn't know.
Luke Shaw (LB) - 6/10 - Pressed with great energy, often nicking in and regaining possession, and made several promising surges up the left wing to combine well with Marcus Rashford.
2. Midfielders
Kalvin Phillips (CM) - 6/10 - Battled and pressed with great vigour while staying tight to his opponents, making sure Romania found it tough to break through the midfield area.
James Ward-Prowse (CM) - 8/10 - Was commanding throughout, reading play brilliantly to make numerous ball recoveries, kept play ticking over with great interchanges both in deep and upfield areas and was excellent from set pieces (of course). Really staked his claim for that 26th spot.
Jack Grealish (AM) - 7/10 - Looked creative whenever he picked up possession and displayed some lovely touches, eventually producing a bit of magic to break into the box and win the penalty from left wing.
3. Forwards
Jadon Sancho (RW) - 6/10 - Bright from the outset and looked to be one of the most likely to make something happen before half-time. Desperately unlucky not to score a beauty in the first 45, but faded afterwards.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) - 6/10 - Made some nice runs in behind but didn't get that much service and therefore never really made an impact. Was unlucky to see a good header hit the bar from a Ward-Prowse free kick, though.
Marcus Rashford (LW) - 7/10 - Looked threatening with the ball at his feet and did show good touches in and around the area, but was mostly halted at crucial times. Proved the match-winner, however, calmly converting the spot-kick.
4. Substitutes
Jordan Henderson (CM) - 6/10 - Predictably looked a bit off the pace in his first bit of action for nearly four months and, despite missing a penalty, still spread play nicely and stayed composed.
Declan Rice (CM) - 7/10
Jude Bellingham (CM) - 7/10
Jesse Lingard (RW) - 6/10
Kieran Trippier (LB) - 6/10
Ollie Watkins (ST) - 6/10
