England 2-2 Belgium: Player ratings as late Bellingham strike secures hard-fought draw
- England drew 2-2 with Belgium at Wembley on Tuesday evening
- Youri Tielemans scored twice in the first half after England errors
- Jude Bellingham's late strike helped the Three Lions avoid successive defeats
Jude Bellingham produced a 95th-minute equaliser as England drew 2-2 with Belgium in an international friendly on Tuesday.
Youri Tielemans proved the thorn in England's side during an exciting first half at Wembley, with the Aston Villa midfielder scoring a brace after several defensive errors to cancel out Ivan Toney's 17th-minute penalty.
England applied plenty of pressure as the game wore on and were eventually rewarded with the final kick of the game, Bellingham firing home from inside the box to secure a deserved draw for Gareth Southgate's side.
How the game unfolded
England were aiming to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brazil at the weekend, but they made a nightmare start to proceedings at Wembley. It took just 11 minutes for Belgium to take the lead in London and it was Jordan Pickford at fault, with the Everton stopper's poor clearance punished by a clever long-range effort by Tielemans.
However, the Three Lions responded quickly after Toney was felled by Jan Vertonghen in the penalty area following a smart move, with the Brentford forward coolly converting the subsequent spot-kick to equalise.
Gareth Southgate's side thought they had completed a first-half turnaround when Jarrod Bowen converted from close range after Lewis Dunk's header from a corner, but the goal was eventually ruled out by VAR for offside.
England had looked the far more impressive team since Toney's penalty, but another error in the backline allowed Belgium to retake the lead before the break. Dunk failed to clear properly following a long ball in behind the hosts' backline, with Romelu Lukaku stealing the ball and setting up Tielemans for his second of the game with a sensational trivela cross to the far post.
England started on the front foot after the restart following a positive first-half display, with Toney coming close to grabbing a second equaliser seven minutes after the break. The striker saw his ferocious near-post strike well saved by Matz Sels, with both Phil Foden and Bellingham spurning promising opportunities minutes later.
Bowen was next to test the Belgium goalkeeper but his instinctive effort following Joe Gomez's cross was comfortably dealt with. Kobbie Mainoo also came close to a first England goal, with his low drive from close range rebuffed to keep the visitors ahead.
England continued to pile pressure on the Belgium goal as the minutes ticked away and Foden was unable to provide a deserved equaliser with a little over ten minutes to play, flashing his powerful strike inches wide of Sels' far post.
It looked as if England were going to fall short of a late equaliser, but Bellingham stepped up to spare their blushes. The ball was kept alive inside the penalty area in the fifth minute of stoppage time and eventually fed through to the Real Madrid midfielder, who stroked the ball into the far corner with little fuss.
England player ratings (4-2-3-1)
GK: Jordan Pickford - 4/10 - A dreadful error handed Belgium their opener and he was seldom called upon otherwise.
RB: Ezri Konsa - 6/10 - Moved to centre-back after John Stones was substituted and wasn't tested often.
CB: Lewis Dunk - 4/10 - Much like Pickford, his defensive mistake cost England a goal, with the Brighton defender flapping at the chance to clear a routine long ball in behind.
CB: John Stones - 5/10 - A few shaky moments in the early stages and he was forced off the pitch with an injury after just ten minutes.
LB: Ben Chilwell - 6/10 - A better performance than his disappointing display against Brazil, but his involvement was largely limited.
CM: Kobbie Mainoo - 8/10 - A truly remarkable display on his first ever England start. The 18-year-old's quick turn of pace helped create the first-half equaliser and he stood out among his peers for his maturity.
CM: Declan Rice - 7/10 - Captaining England for the first time, it was an assured display from the Arsenal midfielder, who enabled Mainoo and Bellingham to impact the game further forward.
RM: Jarrod Bowen - 6/10 - A tireless performance from Bowen, who just lacked a little end product around the penalty area.
AM: Jude Bellingham - 8/10 - Another classy outing from the Real Madrid star, who showcased his superb technical skills throughout. At the heart of England's best moments in the attacking third and snatched a late equaliser with a composed finish.
LM: Phil Foden - 7/10 - Grew into the game after a muted opening half-hour and regularly drifted into dangerous central areas from wide left. Looked sharp in Belgium's half.
ST: Ivan Toney - 7/10 - Marked his first England start with a well-taken penalty that he won himself and his hold-up play was impressive. The Brentford man has perhaps moved ahead of Ollie Watkins in the pecking order.

Belgium player ratings (4-3-3)
GK: Matz Sels - 7/10 - A sharp display to deny some good England efforts, especially in the second period.

CB: Jan Vertonghen - 6/10 - The former Tottenham defender conceded a penalty for a late lunge on Toney in the first half, but was otherwise solid for the visitors.
LB: Arthur Theate - 7/10 - Largely kept Bowen quiet, using his physicality to stifle the West Ham winger.
CM: Orel Mangala - 6/10 - Not as eye-catching as his midfield partners in what was an impressive battle in central areas.

CM: Youri Tielemans - 8/10 - Scored two fantastic goals to give his side the lead heading into the break, the first of which was a clever strike from range. A constant threat as Belgium's most advanced midfielder.
RW: Leandro Trossard - 6/10 - Not involved too often and was guilty of slowing the play down on a few occasions.
ST: Romelu Lukaku - 7/10 - The skipper produced a stunning outside-of-the-boot cross to set up Tielemans' second. Largely isolated as Belgium dropped deeper and deeper.
LW: Jeremy Doku - 7/10 - An electric display from the winger, who tormented Gomez at times. Just lacked the final pass or shot to match his impressive work rate.
