England's Euros kits of the 21st century - ranked

England's new home and away kits that will be used at Euro 2024 have been released, the latest iteration of jerseys seeking to end 58 years of 'hurt' in men's international football.

Gareth Southgate's team went within a whisker of achieving that at the last European Championship - Euro 2020 but in 2021- having recovered from a woeful effort in 2016 that served to mark a new era for the national team and is covered in the excellent Dear England, soon to be made into a TV series.

Shirts are always a big talking points ahead of a major tournament, so let's take the opportunity to rank every home and away England kit for European Championships in the 21st century.

12. Euro 2016 - home

Euro 2016 was a low point for England and poor memories on the pitch will always tarnish how a kit is viewed in hindsight.

This kit, worn when crashing out at the hands of debutants Iceland, matched the Nike template rolled out across the board for multiple teams in the tournament, but the colour choice on the sleeves left the shirt feeling a little washed out.

11. Euro 2016 - away

Originality is nowhere to be seen in Euro 2016's red away kit when it was just the home strip in a different colour - just slightly more vibrant.

10. Euro 2012 - home

Like England's Euro 2012 tournament itself, the white home shirt with red detailing was just quite forgettable.

It wasn't a vintage era for talent, featuring Glen Johnson, Scott Parker, Joleon Lescott and Andy Carroll.

9. Euro 2012 - away

England have deviated from traditional red away kits more willingly in recent times, but in 2012 it was the first time for a non-red change strip in 16 years - since that iconic grey shirt from Euro '96.

It was simple but strong and looked better with matching dark shorts, as seen in the Sweden group stage clash, rather than contrasting lighter blue shorts it was launched with.

8. Euro 2004 - away

Silver shorts, rather white, accompanied England's red jersey from Euro 2004, matching the colour of the cross design on either shoulder.

More than anyone, Wayne Rooney brought this one to life for the fearless performances that he delivered that summer in Portugal.

7. Euro 2024 - home

England's newest home kit, which will be worn by both men's and women's teams after the Lionesses had been given bespoke kits between 2019 and 2023, has a lot going for it.

The clean white design benefits from minimalism, but the retro-style sleeve and shorts cuffs don't quite work.

6. Euro 2020 - away

England's Euro 2020 away kit was never actually worn at the tournament, which is a shame because it was a smart design.

It made its debut in a warm-up match against Romania in Middlesbrough in which Marcus Rashford scored the only goal and featured again in a handful of 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the months that followed.

5. Euro 2020 - home

Delayed by a year thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and modelled on a 1990s classic with a central badge, the Euro 2020 home shirt might well be closer to the top of the list had England won that penalty shootout against Italy at Wembley.

As it is, it gets some extra points for the journey the country went on that summer, but is otherwise solid, not outstanding.

4. Euro 2000 - away

Euro 2000's away kit was of its time but one you could also imagine being done well at any point in the future as long as it were a little more fitted.

England didn't have a great time of it in that tournament, knocked out at the group stage as one golden generation began to fade out, but Alan Shearer throwing himself at the ball to head in a winner against Germany lives on.

3. Euro 2004 - home

The England shirt launched for Euro 2004 was the first to feature a star as a nod to winning the World Cup in 1966.

It was also reversible - Umbro made a few similar two-in-one jerseys around that time - giving fans the choice to wear it with the red shoulder trim showing, or navy blue instead. However, the latter version never actually featured in a match.

2. Euro 2024 - away

Originality is not something that has often featured in England kit colours over the years, very rarely straying from white, red and the occasional blue.

But 2024's away strip is a step slightly outside the box, coloured purple (mixing together yesteryear's reds and blues) in a really nice design. It could be another that doesn't actually feature in the tournament, though.

1. Euro 2000 - home

Timeless, classic England. Even a dreadful Euro 2000 doesn't detract from the white home kit that the Three Lions wore in the Netherlands at the turn of the century.

There were no unnecessary frills after the more out there designs of the 1990s and, much like the aforementioned red away jersey, this shirt could genuinely work in any era if it was rolled out again.
