Leeds United have confirmed that club legend Jack Charlton has sadly passed away at the age of 85, following a long-term illness.

Charlton joined Leeds at the age of just 15 initially as a ground staff member, but he went on to make a club-record 773 appearances during his 23 years at the club as a player. Charlton is widely regarded as one of the great central defenders, and played in each fixture as England won the 1966 World Cup.

Leeds confirmed on their official website that Charlton sadly passed away on Friday evening.

The Charlton family released a statement explaining that Charlton died peacefully at home with his family next to him. It read: "Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.

"As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.

"He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people. His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories."

Leeds' club statement added: "Charlton’s contribution to the game and Leeds United will never be forgotten. He will remain in football folklore forever and his records at Leeds United are unlikely ever to be surpassed. Naturally, our thoughts are with Jack’s family and friends at this difficult time."

Charlton took up the manager's job at Newcastle for the 1984/85 season before becoming Republic of Ireland head coach in February 1986. With him in charge, they reached their first-ever World Cup in 1990 - where they progressed to the quarter-finals before being knocked out.

One of the greats of the game both on and off the field, the footballing world will always remember Charlton.
