England name 26-player squad for upcoming international break
- Harry Maguire called up despite lack of action at Manchester United
- Levi Colwill could make international debut after securing Chelsea starting role
- Eddie Nketiah included after early season form for Arsenal
Eddie Nketiah has been called up to England's squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier with Ukraine and friendly with Scotland, but Raheem Sterling has not been recalled.
24-year-old Nketiah has scored two goals in Arsenal's first three Premier League games, filling in up front for the injured Gabriel Jesus with great aplomb. Nketiah has a tremendous scoring record for England at Under-21 level, scoring 16 times in 17 games, but is yet to be capped at senior level.
That could change after Southgate named him in a strong-looking forward group, but there's no place for Sterling in England's plans despite his bright start to the 2023/24 season.
Sterling's Chelsea team-mate Levi Colwill has made the squad after breaking into Mauricio Pochettino's first team, and he's joined by Lewis Dunk and Fikayo Tomori. John Stones misses out through injury alongside Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw.
James Maddison and Eberechi Eze's fine form, mixed over the start of this season and end of last, see them included in Southgate's squad, with a number of players expected to feature in the game against Scotland, which comes three days after the Euro 2024 qualifier with Ukraine.
England top Group C after winning their first four games, scoring 15 goals and conceding one in just that time. Ukraine are second having played a game less, with Italy in third after playing just twice - one of those defeats came against a 10-player England side in March.
