Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted Christian Eriksen could miss Wednesday's match with former club Tottenham as he is unsure when he will return to training.

Eriksen missed Sunday's dismal 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle, with the Red Devils sorely missing his playmaking and ability to open games up.

Ten Hag revealed pre-match that the midfielder had been suffering with a bout of illness - a factor which also saw Marcus Rashford dropped to the bench - and speaking to Danish outlet Viaplay following the game, he revealed they have not set a timeframe on Eriksen's return.

"We miss him when he's not available," Ten Hag said. "But we have a squad and another 11 players on the pitch. So then we have to construct another team and we can bring players from the bench, who are all good.

"I can't tell [if he will face Tottenham]. I know you're from Denmark, and want to know, and I want to express he's played fantastic in this moment for us. In our team, he really contributes to what we are at this moment.

"I don't know if he will be available for Wednesday but I hope [so], of course."

Eriksen has come up against Spurs just once following his departure from the club in January 2020, featuring in Brentford's 0-0 draw against them back in April.

90min reported earlier this year that Tottenham were in the running to sign Eriksen on a free transfer and were confident of completing a deal, only for the club to change their mind and pull out of the race. He ended up signing for United in July.
