Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag offered an update on Raphael Varane after the defender limped off injured during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

French international Varane, 29, was visibly upset by the injury and appeared to be in tears as he left the field, no doubt worried by the prospect of missing next month's FIFA World Cup.

However, the fact that Varane was able to walk off the pitch and refused the stretcher he was offered may be of some comfort to United fans.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Ten Hag said: "It is difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game.

"We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what it is."

Ten Hag admitted he understood Varane's reaction to the injury, considering the risk of missing the World Cup, but stressed the need for patience as the club awaits further news.

“I can understand, we can all probably understand he would be emotional [if he is out of the World Cup], but I think he also has to wait.

"You don’t know [how bad it is]. Of course he is experienced, but [the] medical [staff] have to do their job, have to make the assessment and set the right diagnosis, and then from there on can come a conclusion.”

The draw at Stamford Bridge keeps United in fifth place in the Premier League table, having recovered from a poor start to the season to find themselves back in the race for European football.

The Red Devils host West Ham next weekend as they look to continue their impressive run in the league.
