Final 2022/23 Serie A Capocannoniere standings

The 2022/23 Serie A season was all about Napoli, and it was Victor Osimhen's goals aided by the arrival of a certain Georgian maestro that helped propel Luciano Spalletti's side to the title.

The Nigeria international's tremendous campaign has been eternally etched into Neapolitan folklore and his exploits in southern Italy mean he's bound to emerge as a protagonist in transfer rumour mills this summer. His stock will be even higher having won Italy's Capocannoniere prize.

In Serie A, there wasn't a striker more productive than Osimhen this season. Here's how the goalscoring charts shaped up at the end of the Italian top flight season in 2022/23.

10. Antonio Sanabria (Torino)

Appearances: 33
Goals: 12

After a couple of middling seasons following his transfer from Real Betis, Sanabria found a more ruthless edge in front of goal as Torino claimed tenth place in Serie A for the second season running.

9. Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

Appearances: 31
Goals: 12

Four-time Capocannoniere winner Immobile endured a down year in 2022/23 as he battled with injury. However, a change in tack from Maurizio Sarri which saw Lazio adopt an even more fluid positional approach in attack meant Immobile's importance dwindled.

8. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli)

Goals: 12

Kvaratskhelia helped turn Napoli into a different beast in 2022/23. His creative instincts saw the likes of Osimhen benefit but he also found the back of the net 12 times himself.

7. Olivier Giroud (Milan)

Like a fine wine.

It was a disappointing season for Milan as they relinquished their Serie A crown, but Giroud was a shining light. The Frenchman, as strange as it sounds, isn't necessarily in the side to score a bucket-load of goals but still enjoyed a fairly prolific campaign for the Rossoneri.

6. M'Bala Nzola (Spezia)

Nzola's goals kept Spezia in Serie A...just.

It was hardly a memorable season for La Spezia, but they nonetheless achieved their primary objective of remaining in the division and Nzola was a major reason why. The forward was quiet down the stretch but still scored over a third of Spezia's Serie A goals (13 of 31).

5. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta)

This was without a doubt Lookman's breakout season. After bright enough spells with Fulham and Leicester, the young forward took his talent to Serie A and he's seemingly found a home in Bergamo.

Lookman enjoyed a majestic run of form either side of the World Cup break before his season was disrupted by a hamstring injury.

4. Rafael Leao (Milan)

Leao didn't come close to reaching the highs of his 2021/22 Serie A MVP-winning season, but the Portuguese superstar still enjoyed a fine campaign as Milan rallied late to secure a top-four berth.

Leao's devastating talent manifested occasionally in 2022/23, most memorably in Naples, and while he still scored 15 Serie A goals, the 23-year-old frustrated as much as he sparkled.

3. Boulaye Dia (Salernitana)

After Davide Nicola oversaw the great escape in Salerno last season, many tipped Salernitana to succumb to Serie B this time around. However, aided by the goals of summer arrival Dia, their Serie A status was never really in doubt as they finished 11 points clear of the drop.

2. Lautaro Martinez (Inter)

The Argentine is the epitome of a hot and cold footballer. The latter iteration manifested at the 2022 World Cup, but Lautaro was red-hot for much of the league season, especially down the stretch as Inter developed into the most potent team in the division.

Lautaro's goals were spread out across the entire season, but a late rally with seven in Inter's final eight league games helped him to his second consecutive 21-goal tally in Serie A.

An early hamstring injury threatened to derail Osimhen's campaign, but Napoli continued to win in his absence and the Nigerian returned to action like a man possessed. He bagged a hat-trick against Sassuolo before the break and scored in eight consecutive games - including two braces - at the start of 2023.

Osimhen was the spiritual hub of this excellent Napoli side, and he played an instrumental role in the club's maiden scudetto triumph since the Diego Maradona era.

Who has won the Serie A Capocannoniere the most?

Nine players have won three or more Capocannonieri over the years, but only one has lifted the scoring title a staggering five times.

Swedish sensation Gunnar Nordahl dominated Serie A's scoring charts at the start of the 1950s as he was named Capocannoniere in five of six seasons between 1949/50 and 1954/55. Ciro Immobile, however, could yet match Nordahl's impressive haul but the Italian appears to be on his way down after topping the Serie A scoring charts on four occasions.

Pre-World War II stars Giuseppe Meazza, whom San Siro is named after, and Aldo Boffi are three-time winners, as are Gigi Riva, Paolo Pulici, and Roberto Pruzzo. The great Michel Platini achieved the rare feat of winning three scoring titles in succession with Juventus in the 80s before diminutive Italian star Beppe Signori joined the illustrious list at the end of the 20th century.
