Fiorentina 1-1 Juventus: Player ratings as Bianconeri's top-four hopes take damaging blow
By Max Cooper
Juventus' top-four hopes suffered another major setback on Sunday afternoon as they laboured to a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina in Florence.
I Bianconeri started the game at a frenetic pace but were almost punished when Erick Pulgar's deflected shot wrong-footed Wojciech Szczesny and struck the post. Luckily, the ball rebounded into the safety of the Polish shot-stopper's arms and Juve survived.
They were not to escape the next danger, however, as Adrien Rabiot handled in the penalty area and Dusan Vlahovic chipped home a cheeky panenka spot-kick to send Fiorentina into the lead. Juve almost levelled just before half-time, but Aaron Ramsey stabbed inches wide from close range.
Andrea Pirlo brought on Alvaro Morata at half-time and the Spaniard repaid his coach's faith less than 40 seconds into the second half, cutting onto his left foot and whipping a delicious curler into the top corner.
But despite dominating the ball for long periods, Juve failed to capitalise on their second wind. Pirlo's men rarely tested Bartlomiej Dragowski in the Fiorentina goal and they were forced to settle for a damaging draw in the race for Champions League qualification.
Right, let's check out the player ratings.
JUVENTUS PLAYER RATINGS
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Wojciech Szczesny (GK) - 6/10 - Showed safe hands to parry Milenkovic's long-range strike. Fortunate for Pulgar's free-kick to bounce off the post and perfectly into his path. Done all ends up by the penalty. Did well to turn another Pulgar effort around the post in the second half.
Matthijs de Ligt (CB) - 7/10 - Felt he was fouled in the penalty area, but it was a stretch. Looked riled up by Vlahovic's bullish style. Brought down Ribery with a crunching challenge on the edge of the box. Daft and worthy of a yellow card.
Leonardo Bonucci (CB) - 6/10 - Dished out some rough treatment to the young Vlahovic, playing on the edge. Steady, but not spectacular.
Giorgio Chiellini (CB) - 6/10 - Typically resolute first half, but unable to stop Juve from falling behind. Allowed the ball to bounce in the six-yard box and caused chaos with Szczesny. Nodded across goal but no one latched onto his assist.
2. Wing-Backs & Midfielders
Juan Cuadrado (RWB) - 6/10 - Found some early joy down that right flank, but the final ball wasn't quite up to scratch. Curled a pass into Morata's path for the equaliser. Got schooled by a lovely piece of Ribery skill in the second half. Not an easy afternoon.
Aaron Ramsey (CM) - 6/10 - Should have hit the target when played through on goal, but a loose first touch put the chance out of reach. Moved out to the left in the second half but couldn't impact the game.
Rodrigo Bentancur (CM) - 6/10 - Slipped Ramsey through on goal, but the Welshman's shoddy finishing denied him an assist. Tidy on the ball, but didn't do enough off of it.
Adrien Rabiot (CM) - 5/10 - Another one for the Rabiot scrapbook since joining Juve. Bizarre decision to raise his arm in the box, and it was caught by VAR. His time in Turin must be running out.
Alex Sandro (LWB) - 6/10 - Caught out on a couple of occasions by Amrabat's incisive runs down the right flank. Looked more comfortable returning to left-back in the second period.
3. Forwards
Paulo Dybala (ST) - 5/10 - Sparked Juve into life with a change of pace and a darting run through the midfield, but Ramsey wasted the opportunity he created. That was it, though, as he made way at half-time. A telling substitution.
Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) - 5/10 - Anonymous in the first half. Couldn't get into the match and his teammates weren't able to pick him out. A below-par performance.
4. Substitutes
Alvaro Morata (ST) - 7/10 - SUPER SUB! Changed the game with his introduction. Brilliant curling effort to draw Juve level. Almost won it at the end, but saw his shot saved.
Dejan Kulusevski (RW) - 6/10
Weston McKennie (LM) - 7/10
