Captaincy is a minefield heading into the final gameweek of the FPL season where motivation and rotation could scupper the output of our most favoured options. So who are the top picks?
Erling Haaland vs Brentford (A)
Ordinarily we would happily put the captaincy on Erling Haaland for his last game of the season and enjoy the points raining in but things aren’t that simple. A 90 minute appearance against Brighton showed his hunger to improve his tally of 36 goals this season and rhythm is important as City look for a historic treble but there’s a chance he’s benched here.
Other than Chelsea, Brentford are the only Premier League side he’s failed to score against this season and the Bees' motivation will be high since they have an outside chance of qualifying for European football next season if they win and other results go their way.
However, Haaland is on penalties and has scored three goals from nine big chances in the last four.
Mohamed Salah vs Southampton (A)
Mo Salah is the form player in the Premier League right now with returns in five consecutive games and no blanks, contributing three goals and four assists in that time. Liverpool's trip to already relegated Southampton could see things align for a big haul for Salah who is on penalties, having produced 14 points at Leeds and 12 points at Leicester in recent weeks.
Salah’s underlying numbers continue to impress too with 16 shots and ten chances created in the last four gameweeks. He leads the way for goal involvements in this time. He’s been a mainstay of Klopp’s squad in recent weeks and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t play close to 90 minutes here.
Harry Kane vs Leeds (A)
Harry Kane has also been one of the key form players over the run-in, averaging over eight points per game. He’s managed attacking returns in each of his last six starts, scoring five goals and notching two assists. Spurs can still finish seventh to guarantee some form of European football for the next campaign.
Opponents Leeds face an uphill battle to avoid the drop with a win required and other results to go their way. They’ll be forced to attack which will leave opportunities for Kane to lead Spurs on the counter, which he’s done very successfully in recent games.
Kane has nine goals on the final day of the Premier League season and scored in the reverse fixture.
