The funniest moments of the 2022/23 Premier League season - ranked

During the very first episode of Premier League Years - the 1992/93 season - there is a compilation of the year's most lighthearted moments played to the tune of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life by Eric Idle.

Really, there should be a separate such video for every Premier League season, but I guess they don't want to keep forking out royalties. That must be it.

Anyway, here are the 25 funniest moments of the 2022/23 campaign. Feel free to play any music in the background to your discretion.

25. Graham Potter says Chelsea will 'try to win the f***ing Champions League', then gets fired

Poor Graham Potter was doomed to fail at Chelsea (and we'll be returning to them in a little while).

He never really had the charisma to help carry such a significant club. He tried his hardest, he tried his darnedest, but it never felt right.

Saying that he would "try to win the... fffff***ing Champions League!" was not a natural mannerism at all.

24. Declan Rice tells Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: "No one likes you."

London derbies between Tottenham and West Ham are always a little heated, but Declan Rice crossed a line here. There is no place for this sort of vile and disgusting behaviour in the beautiful game.

23. David Moyes collapses to his knees after Tomas Soucek's miss at Anfield

West Ham feature quite prominently on this list for a side who did little of note domestically this season.

They came close to scoring a last-gasp equaliser away at Liverpool towards the start of the campaign, only for Tomas Soucek to fire wide from mere yards out.

David Moyes couldn't quite believe it and fell to his knees.

22. Joachim Andersen's slapstick reaction gets Darwin Nunez sent off

Let's stay at Anfield and go back a little further in time.

It's a sticky August night and £86m signing Darwin Nunez is making his home debut.

He's baited into a headbutt by Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen, who perfectly sells the contact with a lovely and rigid fall to the floor. Outstanding from all involved.

21. Richarlison gets clattered after doing some kick-ups

Some classic piss-boiling from Mr Richard Arlison.

With the clock winding down and Tottenham two up at Nottingham Forest, an unchallenged Richarlison started to do some kick-ups while under no pressure. He was then taken out by Neco Williams and blasted by Steve Cooper post-match.

20. Erling Haaland mocks Ben Godfrey

Everton's smash-and-grab 1-1 draw away at Manchester City was one of the surprise results of the season.

Erling Haaland did not take kindly to Ben Godfrey's attempts to wind him up.

19. Danny Welbeck plays hide-and-seek with Liverpool

God bless commentator Gary Taphouse for seeing the funny side to his description of Danny Welbeck's goal for Brighton against Liverpool.

18. Cristian Stellini receives a red card for being a pacifist

Poor Cristian Stellini was thrust right into the Tottenham limelight when his good friend Antonio Conte was sacked.

He didn't want to be the centre of attention, as was evidenced by his refusal to get involved when Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi tried to fight his entire backroom staff.

Stellini was sent off for not controlling his bench, apparently. Talk about damned if you do and damned if you don't.

17. Sam Allardyce tries to bribe the fourth official with a fiver

The Premier League is better when Big Sam is in it.

16. Ivan Perisic makes Virgil van Dijk a meme

For most of the season, Ivan Perisic looked one of the slowest players in the Premier League.

Then he saw the chance to skin Virgil van Dijk with Tottenham 3-0 down at Anfield.

15. Richarlison scores a last-minute equaliser, which is immediately cancelled out

Somehow, someway, Tottenham managed to claw that game back to 3-3. Their leveller came deep into stoppage time, with ex-Everton man Richarlison grabbing his first Premier League goal for Spurs.

Within seconds of the restart, Lucas Moura gifted Diogo Jota the winner.

14. Jurgen Klopp pulls hamstring while celebrating Richarlison's equaliser being cancelled out

We don't condone how Jurgen Klopp always treats match officials with such contempt.

It was only fitting that he was punished with a hamstring strain while trying to give it big to the fourth official following Jota's goal.

13. Mikel Arteta mocks Anthony Taylor

We don't condone how Mikel Arteta always treats match officials with such contempt.

But this was very funny. Fair enough.

12. Jorginho gets up and immediately gets hit in the face with the ball

Official licence holders have not released a clip of this incident, but the video is out there.

Ruben Neves' final action for Wolves could well be firing the ball straight into Jorginho's face seconds after groggily getting back to his feet. Poor guy.

11. The very concept of Nathan Jones

Southampton fans hated Nathan Jones so much that they took a giant P45 to one of his final games at St Mary's.

10. Jurgen Klopp celebrates Mohamed Salah's missed penalty

Perhaps you should just watch the penalty like a normal person next time, Jurgen.

9. Arsenal's strange implosion

Arsenal may not have won the Premier League title if they were top for more than their record 248-day stretch, but the nature of their downfall came from nowhere.

Throwing away 2-0 leads in hostile atmospheres at Liverpool and West Ham? That's at least understandable.

The 3-3 draw with Southampton? The 3-0 meltdown at home to Brighton? The 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest? What was going on?

8. Manchester United lose to Brighton then are immediately linked with Adrien Rabiot & Marko Arnautovic

In hindsight, losing 2-1 at home to Brighton isn't that bad.

But Manchester United began the season in turmoil, and nobody feeds on turmoil quite like Manchester United fans.

So who were their supposed saviours before eventually settling on Casemiro and Antony?

5. The first 21 minutes of Newcastle vs Tottenham

This is a story that is perhaps funnier from a personal point of view.

I, a Spurs fan, was busy cheering on a friend at the London Marathon when Tottenham were playing at Newcastle

I check my phone after one minute - 1-0

I check my phone after 10 minutes - 3-0.

I check my phone after 21 minutes - 5-0.

Mercifully, Newcastle kept the score down to 6-1 in the end.

A story with two happy endings.

Liverpool can enjoy the fact they tore their most bitter of rivals limb from limb at Anfield.

Manchester United can enjoy the face they finished in the top four but Liverpool did not.

One of the greatest players of all time losing his rag that a new manager had figured out he was a net negative to the team and running to cry to one of this country's most infamous journalists will never not be hilarious.

It was made funnier by the fact Manchester United got much better when they ripped up his contract and Lionel Messi won the World Cup.

1. Frank Lampard & the Chelsea circus

We started with Chelsea, we're finishing with Chelsea.

For a club to spend north of €600m+ across two windows and drop nine spots in the league table is unprecedented.

To bring back the failed manager as a caretaker and for him to win only one of his 11 games in charge was gobsmacking and totally unsurprising to anyone with a clue about football.
