Gary Cahill on Mason Mount's contract, Joao Felix's loan & Romelu Lukaku's Chelsea future

It's fair to say that 2022/23 has been a whirlwind of a season for Chelsea Football Club.

Results on the pitch haven't exactly gone to plan - something which led to Graham Potter's sacking in March - and off the pitch an astonishing amount of money has been spent by the new ownership group on players.

Ahead of what will be a season-defining game for the Blues at Stamford Bridge against Real Madrid in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie, 90min sat down with club legend Gary Cahill to discuss some of the comings and goings at the club...

Mason Mount contract situation

"I'm a massive fan of his, I think he's brilliant. I think he's got energy, enthusiasm, he knows what it's what it takes to play for Chelsea, and what it means to play for Chelsea

"I'm a big fan of him. I don't buy the the fact that [he's not playing] because of form. Name me a player who's played unbelievable every game - it doesn't happen. You have dips and then you come back, good players always come back you have debts involved and then you come back and go play has always come back. So yeah I don't buy that.

"I'm sure the club have their own plans, but for me it seems like a simple one to do [to give Mount a new contract]. But that's me talking as a fan looking from the outside in. I think he was all the [desired] attributes when you look at his age, he's in the England squad, and he's only going to get better and he's already at a top level. So I think it's a simple one to do."

Should Chelsea keep Joao Felix?

"I feel like he can help Chelsea in the long run. In the games that I've seen him play in I feel like a lot of good stuff that Chelsea did came through him. He gets in between the lines and gets on the ball.

"The flip side to that is obviously when that is nullified, and you're playing against a team that doesn't give him that space then he needs to impact games in other ways. But I do think he has bundles of ability and, at the minute with Chelsea this season, the squad and team has changed so much that it's hard to get any consistency. It's hard for the players to get consistency.

"I'm not making excuses for some of these players, because I'm sure they know they need to play better, but it's hard when so much is changing all of the time. Maybe that'll be better next season and maybe he'll be one of the players that'll benefit from that if he stays."

Romelu Lukaku return to Chelsea?

"When he first came back I was really excited. The way that he was playing, banging goals in at most places he's been, but when he came back it just didn't work out. He just didn't quite settle.

"I don't know what the future holds in terms of that. He's a strong boy, often as a pivotal main striker. You know, when you say it like that, he ticks every box, but it just hasn't worked out for some reason. So I don't know. I just think it's a huge summer for the club to get the some consistency next year.

"The squad is so big, so getting a manager in place who's going to know who wants in terms of player and in terms of personalities, and then really have a go next year because it seems there's been so much change this season. It's been it's been a tough time."
