Getafe president confirms Mason Greenwood stance amid possible Man Utd revision

Mason Greenwood has been described as "crazy about staying" at Getafe for another year by the club's president, but Manchester United will ultimately decide what happens with the forward.

United conducted their own internal investigation over Greenwood when charges of assault, attempted rape and coercive control against him were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and diminished chances of a conviction as a result.

After it initially appeared that that he was going to be reintegrated at Old Trafford, backlash saw United announce in August that he would be continuing his career elsewhere. Initially that has taken the form of a loan to Getafe, where the player has made 12 goal contributions in 24 games.

With that loan now entering its final months, Greenwood's future is up for discussion once more. But Getafe look keen to keep him and president Angel Torres claims the players wants it too.

"There was a lot of movement, we had to study it," Torres said to El Partizado de COPE, first reflecting on the decision to sign Greenwood last summer. "We found out what had happened. He's doing well, he's calm. He's very comfortable. He's crazy about staying another year.

"It's a matter that [Manchester United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to say it. In Spain, he has a market but they have money. Barca's way of playing is going well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me."

Also referencing reported interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, Torres appeared to suggest that Getafe could end up getting priced out of a permanent deal.

New United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe caused a bit of a stir when he appeared to suggest in recent days that the Greenwood case would be looked at once more by his parent club, at least opening the door to the possibility that he could yet return to play for them next season.

"We will make a decision and we will justify it. He's a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football. So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It's quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that's been made," Ratcliffe said.

"He's on loan obviously but he's not the only one. We've got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

"The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it."

Even though Greenwood has been afforded a second chance in Spain, not everyone has been 'comfortable' with his presence back on a football pitch. There is an uneasiness that he never faced trial for his alleged actions – those who support him commonly wrongly claim that he was 'found innocent' – and upon arriving at Getafe a domestic abuse charity in Spain said the club had "no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women" and called for "moral responsibility".

Jude Bellingham also appeared to make feelings clear when the Real Madrid midfielder was alleged by a lip reader to have called Greenwood a "rapist" during a recent game in La Liga. The incident has been referred to the Spanish federation (RFEF) amid the possibility that Bellingham could be issued with a ban for aiming an offensive term at his opponent if evidence is deemed conclusive.
