Gonzalo Higuain a Doubt for Serie A Return After Suffering a Thigh Injury in Training
Gonzalo Higuain has suffered an injury which could rule him out for the return of Serie A later this month.
After months of negotiations, Italian football was recently given the green light to resume on 20 June. Prior to league action getting underway, the Coppa Italia semi finals between Juventus and Milan and Napoli and Inter will be contested.
Higuain's involvement in the former has been thrown into doubt with the Old Lady confirming that the Argentine suffered a knock in training on Thursday.
"During today's training session, Gonzalo Higuain suffered a muscle strain on the posterior region of his right thigh," they announced via Twitter.
"The tests performed at J⎮Medical have ruled out any lesions. His condition will be monitored in the coming days."
The 32-year-old has endured a back-to-back underwhelming seasons over the past two years, due to a combination of fitness issues and poor form.
During the 2018/2019 campaign, he managed 13 goals in 40 appearances across loan spells at Milan and then Chelsea. His performances this season have been shaky as well. The former Real Madrid man has only notched eight goals in 34 games and had only scored once in his previous 12 Serie A outings prior to the league's suspension.
Juventus will want Higuain back firing on all cylinders as they prepare for a suspenseful culmination to the season. Maurizio Sarri's side currently hold a one point advantage over second placed Lazio. However, Simone Inzaghi's have already beaten the reigning champions twice and still have to play them in Turin.
Away from domestic concerns, Juventus will also have to overturn a one goal deficit when they meet Lyon in the second leg of the two sides' Champions League quarter final.
