Real Madrid and Barcelona have won the most UEFA Super Cups in history, but Los Blancos can break the tie with a victory over Atalanta on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual match that features the reigning Champions League and Europa League champions. The two clubs that won the two biggest competitions in Europe face off for the chance to earn a trophy before their domestic leagues kick off.
Unsurprisingly, Real Madrid have competed in their fair share of UEFA Super Cups. After all, Los Blancos are 15-time Champions League winners, with six of their wins coming in the last ten years. They will make their record ninth appearance in the match on Aug. 14, and are considered the favorites to triumph over Atalanta, the defending Europa League champions.
So, just how many UEFA Super Cups has Real Madrid won ahead of their upcoming clash with Atalanta?
How many UEFA Super Cups has Real Madrid won?
Real Madrid has won five UEFA Super Cups, and all their victories have come this century. Los Blancos secured the title in 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2022.
The 15-time Champions League winners are tied with rivals Barcelona for the most UEFA Super Cups won by any club. Real Madrid would have taken the lead had they won the trophy in 2018 to complete their threepeat of Champions Leagues and UEFA Super Cups, but Zinedine Zidane's side fell to Atletico Madrid in extra time.
Real Madrid also failed to win the trophy in 1998 and 2000. If Carlo Ancelotti's squad cannot defeat Atalanta, they will tie Barcelona with the most losses (4) in the competition's history.
It goes without saying, though, that Real Madrid are the favorites heading into the 2024 UEFA Super Cup, especially with the addition of Kylian Mbappe this summer. Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham are also in Carlo Ancelotti's squad after the superstars represented their countries this summer at Copa America 2024 and Euro 2024.
With such world-class players on the pitch, Real Madrid are looking to add a sixth UEFA Super Cup to their trophy cabinet.
