How Marc-Andre ter Stegen's new contract compares to Robert Lewandowski and Barcelona squad
- Marc-Andre ter Stegen has signed a new deal which keeps him at Barcelona until 2028
- German shot-stopper played a crucial role in La Liga title win and is a key leader in the dressing room
- Ter Stegen has reportedly agreed wage reduction amid Barca's financial issues
Marc-Andre ter Stegen's renaissance in Catalonia has seen him re-emerge as a key man in Xavi Hernandez's project.
During the time when Covid was sweeping the globe, questions arose surrounding the German shot-stopper's long-term future at Barcelona. After making a stellar impression following his arrival from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, Ter Stegen's once imperious form started to dissipate with injuries and surgeries perhaps taking their toll.
However, Ter Stegen has responded in a big way since Xavi took the reins. The sweeper-keeper notched a staggering 26 La Liga clean sheets last season as Barca lifted the title and he's once again regarded as one of the very best at the position following a couple of years in the abyss.
The 31-year-old has now penned a contract extension which keeps him on Barca's books until 2028, and many would think that the sublime form he displayed last season which result in a bumper new salary. That, however, is not the case.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen new Barcelona contract salary
Barcelona's relentless drive to reduce their wage bill has continued with Ter Stegen reportedly agreeing to a pay cut in order to extend his deal in Catalonia.
The club's financial woes are still crippling La Blaugrana, and it's believed the German shot-stopper has done the club a favour by accepting reduced terms. Ter Stegen's weekly wage is now said to be just over €120,000 which means he'll be bringing in €6.3m a year.
The 31-year-old is now the 14th highest-paid player at the club, with the likes of Clement Lenglet and summer arrival Inigo Martinez all earning more than one of the best goalkeepers Europe has to offer. Ter Stegen really has done Barcelona a massive favour.
Under his previous contract, Ter Stegen was earning €173,000 a week and €9m annually.

Barcelona 2023/24 squad salaries
Frenkie de Jong remains Barca's top earner. His salary has seen the Dutch midfielder attract transfer interest which the Catalan club weren't previously quick to dismiss given the bleak outlook of their finances. However, his contract still has another three years to run and De Jong has no intention of leaving Camp Nou just yet.
Striker Robert Lewandowski is on just over half of De Jong's salary as the second-highest paid squad member at Barca, with summer signing Ilkay Gundogan not too far behind in third. His compatriot Ter Stegen is way down the table in 14th, behind both well-established first team stars and much maligned failed transfers like Lenglet.
