Key dates for 2023 Liga MX Apertura Clasicos

September 16- Club America vs. Chivas

Club America and Chivas will renew their rivalry on Saturday, September 16th at Estadio Azteca.

America got the better of Chivas during the 2023 Clausura winning 4-2 and later 2-1, before falling in the semifinals 3-2 on aggregate. Given last tournament's results, the upcoming fixture is bound to be explosive.

America heads into the new season with head coach Andre Jardine after reportedly being close to appointing Gregg Berhalter, who returned the U.S. men's national team. Chivas, on the other hand, will hope to be back in the finals and win it this time around.

September 2-Cruz Azul vs. Club America

The two sides met previously in April as Club America defeated Cruz Azul with a convincing 3-1 win. Despite taking the lead early on, Cruz Azul conceded two goals just before and right after halftime couple with a red card to make things worse. America went on to win thanks to Henry Martin's 63rd minute goal that sealed Cruz Azul's fate.

Los Celestes will have the chance to avenge that defeat at home against America on September 2nd.

September 30-Club America vs. Pumas

A 1-1 draw was the scoreline last time out between America and Pumas, with Nestor Araujo and Henry Martin sealing the points for both teams. Both goals came within four minutes of each other in the 68th and 72nd minutes, respectively.

America will be the hosts again as they will do battle once more on September 30th at Estadio Azteca.

October 7- Cruz Azul vs. Pumas

In the 2023 Clausura, Cruz Azul narrowly edged out Pumas UNAM 1-0 back in March. And now, the two sides will meet again on October 7th at Estadio Azteca in a highly anticipated matchup.

At the end of March, Pumas appointed Antonio Mohamed as their new head coach, replacing Rafael Puente Jr. in hopes to bring success to a weakened side. With soaring expectations, El 'Turco' Mohamed must defeat Cruz Azul to win the hearts of the fanbase.

October 7- Chivas vs. Atlas

The Clasico Tapatio will be a good one this time around.

Chivas and Atlas met three times in the 2023 Clausura, with Atlas winning just once. The first meeting was an entertaining 3-3 draw back on April 1st, before dynamics changed in the quarterfinals. Atlas won the first leg 1-0, before Chivas advanced on the away goals rule by winning 1-0 in the second leg.

Now, Atlas will look for revenge when traveling to take on Chivas on October 7th in a game that beckons for goals to be scored.

October 28- Chivas vs. Tigres

Tigres fell to Chivas, 2-1, back in February despite a late penalty kick goal from Nicolas Ibanez. The 2023 final, however, was one for the books. The first leg was a 0-0 stalemate, but the second leg was a 3-2 victory for Tigres as they came back from 2-0 down. Guido Pizarro scored the winning goal in the 110th minute while red cards were shown to both teams in the dying stages.

The two storied clubs will face off again on October 28th when Chivas will play hosts to their rivals.

September 23- Tigres vs. Monterrey

Rayados held the edge against Tigres during regular-season action, winning 1-0 before holding their opponents to a 0-0 during the Clausura. But Tigres came back stronger during the playoffs, as a 79th minute goal by Sebastian Cordova in the second leg broke the 1-1 deadlock from the first leg to seal the team's place in the final.

Rayados will now hope for better fortunes in the postseason, employing former Club America coach Fernando Ortiz to take over for Manuel Vucetich in hopes of landing a trophy. Tigres, on the other hand, have brought in two new players this summer Eugenio Pizzuto and Carlos Felipe Rodriguez to stregthen the team.

Tigres hosts Monterrey on September 23rd at Estadio Universitario in what could be a huge game in the playoff race.
