How USNMT players fared in Europe's top five leagues: 19-21 March
By Harry Symeou
With a growing number of players from the United States plying their trade in European football's top leagues, there's every reason to be excited about the future of the USMNT.
Throw into the mix the hosting of the 2026 World Cup, and it's even more apparent why it's so important for these players to prosper in their foreign surroundings, all geared towards a solid showing as hosts.
Here, 90min rounds up how the stars of USMNT got on in the latest round of matches across the big five leagues.
10. Zack Steffen
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Manchester City
Steffen is Pep Guardiola's second choice stopper at the Etihad Stadium but was handed a start in the club's 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton at Goodison Park.
He's been limited to just 10 first-team appearances so far this season but the former Columbus Crew goalkeeper is a regular in the Manchester City squad.
9. Tim Ream
Position: Defender
Club: Fulham
Tim Ream was an unused substitute in Fulham's 2-1 Premier League defeat to Leeds on Friday night.
The 33-year-old has made just five appearances in the English top-flight this season and with his contract at the club due to expire in the summer, it is likely he could move on.
8. Antonee Robinson
Position: Left-back
Club: Fulham
Antonee Robinson has established himself as a first-team regular this season, making 24 Premier League appearances so far this season.
After sitting on the bench for Fulham's recent games against Liverpool and Man City, he was restored to the starting XI by Scott Parker for the clash with Leeds - but was unable to stop his side slipping to defeat.
7. Yunus Musah
Position: Winger
Club: Valencia
18-year-old Yunus Musah is making waves in La Liga with Valencia, but has seen very little action in the last couple of weeks.
Against Granada on Sunday, he was introduced from the bench with just three minutes remaining, replacing goalscorer Daniel Wass in a 2-1 win. Needless to say, he didn't have time to do much.
6. Chris Richards
Position: Centre-back
Club: Hoffenheim
Richards, formerly of FC Dallas, joined Bayern Munich back in 2018 but is currently on loan with Hoffenheim - for whom he has appeared six times in the Bundesliga so far this season.
The 20-year-old, born in Alabama, started in the heart of defence against Mainz, but was unable to stop his side going down 2-1. Still, more regular action is a positive, right?
5. Tyler Adams
Position: Defensive midfield
Club: RB Leipzig
One of the more impressive emerging USMNT players currently based in Europe is Leipzig's Tyler Adams, who has started 62% of his side's Bundesliga games this season.
At the weekend, he played 90 minutes for Julian Nagelsmann as they won 1-0 at Arminia Bielefeld - keeping the pressure on Bayern Munich at the top of the table.
4. Josh Sargent
Position: Centre-forward
Club: Werder Bremen
21-year-old Sargent has impressed in Germany this season, bagging five goals. That mirrors his return on the international stage, which has been chalked up in just 12 appearances.
He only lasted 57 minutes of the weekend defeat to Wolfsburg, but has scored three goals in his last five Bundesliga appearances.
3. Giovanni Reyna
Position: Attacking midfielder
Club: Borussia Dortmund
Reyna made his return from injury last weekend as a substitute, but was restored to the starting lineup on Saturday when Borussia Dortmund faced FC Koln.
The 18-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of USMNT's most talented prospects, failed to really get into the game, and was unable to help his side earn three points - much to the disappointment of Erling Haaland, who had an epic temper tantrum after the final whistle.
2. Christian Pulisic
Christian Pulisic has been in and out of the Chelsea side this season, but
started the FA Cup quarter final victory over Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
His performance was pretty good overall, though he'll have been frustrated by Aaron Ramsdale denying him twice in front of goal.
1. Weston McKennie
Position: Centre-midfield
Club: Juventus
McKennie joined Juventus on loan from Schalke in September 2020, and it didn't take I Bianconeri long to activate a clause making the switch permanent.
But as good as the American has been, he couldn't prevent Juve from slipping to an embarrassing defeat to Filippo Inzaghi's Benevento - though McKennie can at least argue that he didn't start the game.
