Holders Portugal kicked off their Euro 2020 journey with a commanding, if late, 3-0 win over Hungary on Tuesday evening, courtesy of a goal from Raphael Guerreiro and a Cristiano Ronaldo brace.

Portugal predictably dominated proceedings from minute one but somehow failed to open the scoring before half-time, with Diogo Jota and Ronaldo (a shock, I know) both passing up gilt-edged opportunities.

The second half proved to be much more competitive and it was actually Hungary who came closest to finally breaking the deadlock with ten minutes to go. Loic Nego played the ball through to fellow substitute Szabolcs Schon and the 20-year-old slotted past Rui Patricio. The underdogs' celebrations were cut short, however, when the linesman's offside flag came up - and stayed up following a VAR check.

Instead, it was Portugal who would go on to find the opening goal in the 85th minute. Rafa's cut-back fell to Raphael Guerreiro, before the left-back's effort squirmed agonisingly into the bottom corner via a deflection. Willi Orban then brought Rafa down in the box, allowing Ronaldo to convert from 12 yards out - becoming the tournament's all-time leading scorer in the process.

The Portuguese legend then grabbed his brace by collecting Silva's pass, rounding Peter Gulacsi and tapping into an empty net with staggering composure.

Now, let's get to the player ratings...

HUNGARY PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Peter Gulacsi (GK) - 7/10 - Made a couple of great stops and very much deserves more than a 3-0 loss.

Endre Botka (CB) - 8/10 - Handled the threat from Portugal's left fantastically well, remaining strong and composed throughout to make twelve interventions.

Willi Orban (CB) - 6/10 - Was mostly commanding at the heart of the back line but was unlucky to see Guerreiro's effort deflect off him, before giving away the penalty for Portugal's second.

Attila Szalai (CB) - 6/10 - Read play to decent effect but was often left isolated by his wing-back and couldn't get as many defensive interventions as his colleagues.

2. Wing-backs and midfielders

Andras Schaefer

Gergo Lovrencsics (RWB) - 7/10 - Showed a lot of energy up and down the right flank and was always willing to get snappy, press hard and put a foot in to disrupt his opposition.

Laszlo Kleinheisler (CM) - 6/10 -
Was clearly the level head in Hungary's midfield and, although he didn't see a lot of it, he remained assured and composed on the ball and supplied efficient distribution.

Adam Nagy (CM) - 6/10 -
Positioned himself well enough as the holding midfielder and occasionally broke dangerous moves down but wasn't solid enough to really protect the back three.

Andras Schafer (CM) - 7/10 -
Despite his lack of experience he was arguably his side's brightest player, adding guile in midfield to make five interceptions and always aiming to break out quickly - but they clearly lacked Dominik Szoboszlai.

Attilo Fiola (LWB) - 5/10 -
Struggled to contain the pace of Nelson Semedo and the creativity of Rafa, leaving his centre-back very open down his side's left-hand side.

3. Forwards

Adam Szalai (ST) - 6/10 - Held the ball up well at times, and supplied some sort of threat when given an opportunity. The captain's passion was clear in his willingness to press constantly, but he just couldn't make it count.

Roland Sallai (ST) - 5/10 -
Woke up after half-time but couldn't be the effective out ball his side so desperately needed throughout.

4. Substitutes

Loic Nego (CM) - 6/10

David Siger (CM) - 5/10

Szabolcs Schon (ST) - 6/10

Kevin Vaga (ST) - N/A

Roland Varga (ST) - N/A

PORTUGAL PLAYER RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Rui Patricio (GK) - 6/10 - Called into action much more after the interval but was never troubled too much.

Nelson Semedo (RB) - 8/10 -
Used his pace to supply a great threat upfield stayed solid at the back, making seven tackles.

Pepe (CB) - 7/10 -
As combative as ever and remained strong to deny forward runners looking to break out, while also playing out from the back really well.

Ruben Dias (CB) - 7/10 - Read the game nicely, stayed his composed self, and was immovable as the ball came his way, making four tackles.

Raphael Guerreiro (LB) - 8/10 - Started slowly but gradually demonstrated his quality going upfield, linking nicely with Jota and co. to create openings for others and got the all-important opener late on.

6. Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes

Danilo (CM) - 8/10 - Screened the back four excellently, sweeping and hoovering up nearly everything that came his way to constantly recycle possession with great effect.

William Carvalho (CM) - 5/10 -
Another decent defensive performance, making three tackles, but as the central midfielder with more freedom, he didn't offer much going forward and failed to create chances.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) - 7/10 -
Floated around nicely and had some neat exchanges with teammates as well as providing some fantastic deliveries, eventually racking up three key passes. Always a threat when he got on the ball.

7. Forwards

Bernardo Silva (RW) - 6/10 - Took his time to grow into the match but, although he never truly got a grip on things, he did show his creative flair to whip in the occasional delicious cross.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) - 9/10 -
Barely got the service to make an impact at all. But eventually found a way to score and grab himself another record, then notched a stunning second. He is inevitable.

Diogo Jota (LW) - 5/10 -
Was very bright and showed brilliant movement, but his end product let him down. Wasted a fair few chances, including criminally stealing the ball off the toes of Fernandes from eight yards out.

8. Substitutes

Rafa Silva (RW) - 9/10 - What an impact. Assisted the first, won the penalty for the second and assisted again for the third. What a way to give your manager a headache.

Andre Silva (ST) - 6/10

Renato Sanches (CM) - 6/10

Joao Moutinho (CM) - N/A
