England's perfect start to World Cup qualifying continued as they picked up a 4-0 victory over a resolute Hungary side in front of a hostile Budapest crowd.

The game began as you'd expect. England dominated possession but were regularly frustrated by some physical defending which prevented Gareth Southgate's men from really getting anything going.

Hungary threatened on the counter but rarely gave Jordan Pickford anything to do, and the first half ended without a single shot on target.

The first real chance came in the 50th minute as Harry Kane got himself though on goal, but the Tottenham man sent his effort right into the body of goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. England finally got their goal as Mason Mount's cross was expertly finished off by Raheem Sterling, who was pelted by countless cups as he celebrated.

Kane made it two shortly after the hour mark as he headed home from a Sterling cross, before Harry Maguire made it three with a header of his own shortly after.

Declan Rice put the cherry on top with a strike from long range that squirmed through Gulacsi and into the back of the net, capping off what turned out to be a comfortable evening for the Three Lions.

England player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) - 6/10 - Did well to stay warm. Made a save after the break. Nice one.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 6/10 - A very underwhelming first half which yielded some abysmal passes, but clearly had his head shaken at half-time. Stepped his game up significantly after the break.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 8/10 - Stayed switched on despite not always having a lot to do. Dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch, as evidenced with his goal, and he pulled out some impressive passes to boot.

John Stones (CB) - 6/10 - Had a nervy moment early on which proved his lack of minutes so far this season but recovered from that well.

Luke Shaw (LB) - 6/10 - Took too many touches in attack and didn't play with enough urgency, but whipped in some excellent corners and gifted Maguire his goal.

2. Midfielders

Kalvin Phillips (DM) - 7/10 - Tried to get forward in the first half but struggled against Hungary's deep defence. Went more defensive in the second half and did very well to hoover up possession.

Declan Rice (DM) - 7/10 - Probably needed to be a little more creative at times but proved to be incredibly valuable with his interceptions. Seemed to attract loose balls in the second half.

Raheem Sterling (RM) - 7/10 - Had some entertaining moments on the ball and gave Hungary's full-back an absolute beating, but felt wasted out on the right. Drifted inside for his goal, took it with real composure and led by example.

Mason Mount (AM) - 7/10 - Given more of an attacking role here, Mount struggled early on but got himself going after the break with some brilliant movement.

Jack Grealish (LM) - 7/10 - After spending the first half practicing his falls to the floor, Grealish stepped things up after the interval. Pulled a lot of strings and involved himself in a few of the goals.

3. Forward

Harry Kane (ST) - 6/10 - Was dropping incredibly deep in the first half and his presence in the box was missed, but he stayed more advanced after the break and predictably got his goal. Did miss two or three great chances but fortunately got away with it.
