Important Dates as 2020/21 La Liga Fixture List Released
By Ross Jackson
The 2020/21 La Liga campaign will kick off on 12 September 2020, however, with a whole host of postponements already in place, a number of clubs won't play their first matches until either Gameweek 2 or 3.
Champions Real Madrid are one of the clubs affected, as their campaign kicks off in Gameweek 2 away at Real Sociedad on 20 September 2020. Meanwhile, Barcelona also face similar issues, with their season not getting underway under Gameweek 3 at home to Villarreal.
However, the opening weekend of matches does offer the thrills of a Valencia derby, as Valencia host Levante on Sunday 13 September.
Here's 90min's rundown of all the key dates to note in your diary ahead of what promises to be another scintillating La Liga campaign.
When Are the Clasicos?
Spanish football's behemoths first cross paths on 25 October 2020 as Real Madrid travel to Camp Nou. Zinedine Zidane's side came away from last season's trip to Barça with a point following a 0-0 draw, while a 2-0 win for Los Blancos in the reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu represented a healthy return against their fierce rivals.
The second Clasico of the season will take place on 11 April 2021, as the Blaugrana look to regain their title.
When Are the Madrid Derbies?
After El Clasico, the other big dates in the calendar of any Real Madrid fan are their clashes with city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Zidane's men 'welcome' Diego Simeone's side to the Santiago Bernabeu on 13 December 2020, as they look to replicate the 1-0 win they produced last season on their way to the title.
Meanwhile, the reverse clash takes place on 7 March 2021, with Simeone no doubt desperate to bridge last season's 17-point gap between his side and their rivals.
When Are the Other Big Games?
As previously mentioned the first Valencia derby of the season takes place on the opening weekend, while Valencia travel to Levante in the reverse fixture on 13 March 2021.
Anyone looking forward the Seville derbies has unfortunately got a bit of a wait, with the first not taking place until 3 January 2021 as Real Betis host Sevilla, with the reverse fixture taking place just a few months later on 13 March 2021.
Away from derbies one of the other standout clashes of the season involving Atleti and Barcelona first takes place on Gameweek 10 which begins on 22 November 2020, while Atleti's trip to Camp Nou is the standout fixture of Gameweek 35 which begins on 9 May 2021.
