Injury Update on John McGinn Ahead of Aston Villa's Return to Action
By David Ford
In the wake of the Premier League heading towards its resumption, Aston Villa have been handed a massive boost from the treatment room, as star midfielder John McGinn is cleared to resume full training.
The Scottish international has been sidelined since 21 December with an ankle ligament injury he sustained in a 3-1 defeat to Southampton. He's since left a massive hole in the middle of the park for Villa, and his return will be greatly welcomed by Dean Smith.
McGinn will return to an Aston Villa side who are languishing in 19th place in the Premier League table, having lost their previous four games before the Coronavirus suspended play. They do, however, have a game in hand on the clubs around them, and will hope that McGinn will help get them back to winning ways.
Initially, the midfielder was due to return to first team action in early April, albeit he may have been rushed back prematurely to stop the club's slide. According to the Daily Mail, the pandemic has allowed McGinn to fully recover and rebuild his fitness properly.
McGinn joined Villa from Hibs in the summer of 2018 for £2.79m and he quickly established himself as a fan favourite during the clubs promotion from the Championship. He showed his class again this season, scoring three goals in 18 games before his injury.
He also showed his ability at international level during 2019, scoring seven goals for Scotland in their qualifying group for Euro 2020 as they finished third, and he will hope to carry that form on from the first whistle as top flight football in England resumes.
