Inter confirm appointment of Simone Inzaghi on two-year deal

Inter have confirmed the appointment of Simone Inzaghi as Antonio Conte's managerial successor at the club.

Conte departed after concerns over the direction of the club emerged, just weeks after the club ended its Serie A title drought. The owners are strapped for cash and certain players could be sold to make ends a meet, a vision Conte did not agree with.

Inzaghi soon emerged as the frontrunner, even though at one point it looked like he would extend his contract with Lazio.

However, Inter have now confirmed Inzaghi has signed a two-year deal with the Nerazzurri, with his first task perhaps agreeing what players will be sacrificed this summer to raise funds.

A short statement on Inter's website read: "FC Internazionale Milano would like to welcome Simone Inzaghi to the Club, as our new First Team Coach: the Italian manager has signed a two-year deal with the Nerazzurri."

Prior to the announcement, Lazio had released a slightly tetchy statement of their own - writing about his departure from the club on Thursday night: “We respect the change of mind of a coach and, before that, of a player who for many years tied his name to the Lazio family and the many Biancocelesti successes.”

Inzaghi signed for Lazio as a player in 1999, helping them win a Serie A title and a smattering of Coppas Italia before his retirement in 2010. He returned as manager in 2016 as I Biancocelesti looked to reverse their fortunes after a few disappointing years.

Inzaghi regularly led them to European qualification before they finally returned to the Champions League for the first time in 13 years this past season, finishing second in their group before bowing out to Bayern Munich in the last 16.

He also won the 2018/19 Coppa Italia and 2017 and 2019 versions of the Supercoppa Italiana during his time as a manager at Stadio Olimpico.
