Inter Miami sign Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Boca Juniors
- Weigandt joins the Herons on loan through the 2024 MLS campaign
- Miami can extend Weigandt's stay through the 2025 campaign should he perform well
- The Herons have needed a natural right-back since trading DeAndre Yedlin
Inter Miami have signed right-back Marcelo Weigandt on loan through the 2024 MLS season from Argentinian giants Boca Juniors.
It's a much-needed acquisition for Miami boss Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, as the Herons have been without a true right-back for several weeks after DeAndre Yedlin was traded to FC Cincinnati. Julian Gressel has filled in here and there at the position, but he isn't a natural fit and Martino has adapted by using three-at-the-back formations with wing-backs instead of full-backs.
Should Weigandt perform well enough, Miami have the option of extending his loan through the 2025 MLS season, and the signing allows Martino to opt for his preferred 4-3-3 formation. Miami were desperate for a natural right-back as Jordi Alba and Noah Allen were the only two fit full-backs prior to Weigandt's arrival.
"We're pleased to bring defender Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Boca Juniors. He is a skillful young defender that is fit and ready to contribute. Marcelo comes with experience in both domestic and international competitions. We think this addition helps strengthen our squad to compete for titles," Miami chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said in a release.
The 24-year-old arrives in south Florida having made 72 appearances for Boca Juniors, registering three goals and seven assists after his debut in October 2018. Wiegandt was sent out on loan in between two stints with Boca with Argentinian club Gimnasia LP, where he recorded three goals and three assists in 21 appearances.
Weigandt has represented Argentina at the international level with the U-20 and U-17 teams. He also brings a winning mentality to the south Florida side, having lifted two league titles, two super cups, one Terneos de Verano and one Copa Argentina with Boca.
"I'm excited and proud to be joining such an ambitious club like Inter Miami. I'm looking forward to joining my new teammates, wearing the Club’s colors, and giving my all to help the team achieve our objectives," Weigandt said.
Miami return to action this Saturday to take on NYCFC at Chase Stadium, with superstar Lionel Messi unavailable for selection due to his lingering hamstring injury.
