The Invincible records Arsenal can break in 2022/23

Arsenal look to be having their most enjoyable season since the Invincibles of 2003/04 as Mikel Arteta has them sat at the top of the Premier League table with 50 points after 19 games.

They may not be able to match the record of not losing a Premier League game as Manchester United got the better of the Gunners at Old Trafford, but they are actually on a better points tally than the Invincibles were on when they had played 19 games.

There are a number of records that this Arsenal team could try to beat in comparison to the Invincibles side and it would be an incredible achievement for Arteta and the squad.

Defensive records for Arsenal to beat

Clean sheets

The 2003/04 side managed to acquire a very impressive eight clean sheets by the 19-game stage that season. Funnily enough, the current Arsenal side has also got eight clean sheets. The Invincibles ended the year with clean sheets, so if Arteta's side carries on at their current trajectory, they can beat that record.

Goals conceded

The Invincibles had conceded 12 goals at the 19-game stage, which is a little better than Arteta's side who have conceded 16. In order for Arsenal to beat that record, they need to concede fewer than ten in the rest of the season which seems a big ask.

Attacking records

Goals scored

The 2003/04 side had scored 35 goals by this stage but the current side is streaking ahead with 45 goals already. Ending the season with 73, the Invincibles stayed pretty much at the same scoring rate for the rest of the campaign, so if the 2022/23 side can do the same, they are set to break that record.

Top goalscorer

This is one that the Invincibles may have in the bank. Thierry Henry was the top scorer for Arsenal and in the Premier League altogether with 30 goals. At this stage, Arsenal's top scorer is Martin Odegaard with eight goals. Given Erling Haaland currently has 25, it seems unlikely that an Arsenal player will win the Golden Boot.

General team records

Unbeaten streaks

This is a cruel one on the current side. Arsenal were unbeaten for the whole season, and the current side has lost one game, so that's out the window. Arteta's side are now 13 unbeaten in the league.

Total points

The current Arsenal team has actually got five more points at this stage of the season than the Invincibles did, with 50 as opposed to 45. They ended the 2003/04 season with 90 so again, on current trajectory, the current side can break that record. Manchester City may push them all the way, too.

Goal difference

Due to the superior number of goals scored, the current side has a goal difference of +29, compared to the +23 of the Invincibles. They ended the campaign on +47 so there is certainly scope for Arteta to break this record.

Date the title is won

The Invincibles won the Premier League title on April 25, 2004. They drew with, of all teams, Tottenham. They also did it at White Hart Lane, much to the anguish of the watching Tottenham fans. Having already played Spurs twice in the league this season, Arteta won't be able to recreate such a day.

They still had four games left to play, which means Arsenal will really have their work cut out if they are going to build that sort of a gap over a Manchester City side that will surely become more consistent as the season goes on.

As things stand, though, they are doing even better than the 2003/04 side and stand to break many of their records from that special season, even if one of them is not going unbeaten.
