Italy required penalties to reach the Euro 2020 final, defeating Spain on spot-kicks after the game finished 1-1.

The opening 45 minutes were enthralling, although neither side found the back of the net. Pedri pulled the strings for Spain and he teed up Mikel Oyarzabal and Dani Olmo for his side's best chances of the half.

Meanwhile, Italy looked dangerous on the break with Emerson hitting the woodwork just before the break.

In the second half things were quite open and on the hour mark the Azzurri grabbed the game's opener. Federico Chiesa was the scorer, latching onto a loose ball in the box and curling an unstoppable effort into the far corner.

Spain pressed hard for an equaliser and eventually found a breakthrough with substitute Alvaro Morata finishing off a free-flowing move with ten minutes on the clock.

This strike sent the game to extra-time. In the additional period Spain looked more likely to score for the most part. However, Italy thought they had won it in the second half through Domenico Berardi, only for his fine finish to be chalked off for offside.

In the shootout, each team's first taker missed. This was followed by four successful spot-kicks before Morata failed to convert, allowing Jorginho to send Italy to the final. The Azzurri will play either Denmark or England on Sunday, depending on the outcome of Wednesday's other semi-final.

Here are here each set of players rated at Wembley...

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) - 6/10 - His passing was sometimes poor and put his side under pressure. Made every save he was forced into without too much bother.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo (RB) - 7/10 - Conducted a bit of a hatchet job of Ferran Torres which successfully limited his influence. Defended very well overall.

Leonardo Bonucci (CB) - 6/10 - Played around Spain's press effectively at times. Pulled around by Morata for the equaliser.

Giorgio Chiellini (CB) - 6/10 - Struggled early on with the deep position Dani Olmo took up. Grew into the game after this but was bamboozled by Morata for the equaliser.

Emerson (LB) - 7/10 - Had big shoes to fill in Leonardo Spinazzola's absence but rose to the challenge. Got in behind a few times and carried the ball dangerously.

2. Midfielders

Nico Barella (CM) - 6/10 - Made some late runs into the box. Was also tireless off the ball helping Italy battle in midfield.

Jorginho (CM) - 6/10 - Outshone by Sergio Busquets in the battle of the deep-lying playmakers. Still had his moments, though he was not on the ball as much as he would have wanted.

Marco Verratti (CM) - 7/10 - A bustling display. He was Italy's best midfielder, doing a bit of everything.

3. Forwards

Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa (RW) - 8/10 - His direct running caused Spain some problems early on. Finish was terrific for the goal.

Ciro Immobile (ST) - 5/10 - Isolated for the first 45 minutes, barely touching the ball. Got in behind a few times after the break before being subbed.

Lorenzo Insigne (LW) - 5/10 - His least effective spell of the tournament early on. Improved somewhat after the break but was still substituted before full-time.

4. Substitutes

Domenico Berardi, Aymeric Laporte

Domenico Berardi - 7/10 - A real threat. He had one effort well saved by Simon in normal time.

Rafael Toloi - 5/10 - Came on, got a yellow in extra-time. That was pretty much it.

Matteo Pessina - 6/10 - Added energy to his tiring side.

Andrea Belotti - 6/10 - Helped his side eat up the clock in extra-time. Badly misplaced a through ball to Berardi which could have been decisive.

Manuel Locatelli - 6/10 - Neat and tidy - but missed his penalty.

Federico Bernardeschi - N/A

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Unai Simon

Unai Simon (GK) - 6/10 - A couple of suspect moments. He did make a few important stops, though.

Cesar Azpilicueta (RB) - 5/10 - Caused serious problems by his Chelsea clubmate Emerson early on. Not always convincing.

Eric Garcia (CB) - 6/10 - Passing was close to spotless throughout. Was not forced into a huge amount of defending but should have done better for Chiesa's goal.

Aymeric Laporte (CB) - 7/10 - Made a real hash of a clearance in the lead up to Chiesa's goal. Other than that he defended well, making the error all the more frustrating.

Jordi Alba (LB) - 6/10 - Delivery was lacking and he struggled to cause Di Lorenzo that many problems. Not bad defensively.

6. Midfielders

Pedri, Giorgio Chiellini

Koke (CM) - 7/10 - Provided the bite and industry Spain's midfield needed. Got his team going with some terrific passes after they conceded.

Sergio Busquets (CM) - 7/10 - Italy gave him far too much space early on and he used it to completely control the game. After this strong start his influence waxed and waned.

Pedri (CM) - 8/10 - Did not misplace a single pass in the first half and carved out his side's best chances. Felt like his arrival as a superstar early on, but he faded somewhat after the break.

7. Forwards

Mikel Oyarzabal

Ferran Torres (RW) - 5/10 - Had a couple of bright moments in the final third. Largely though, Di Lorenzo kept him shackled.

Dani Olmo (ST) - 7/10 - Deployed in a deep, false nine role. His positioning caused Italy real problems and link-up play was sublime. Set up Morata for the equaliser. Shame about the penalty...

Mikel Oyarzabal (LW) - 4/10 - Needed to be more clinical. He squandered two good chances which ultimately cost his team dearly.

8. Substitutes

Alvaro Morata, Dani Olmo, Rodri, Gerard Moreno

Gerard Moreno - 5/10 - A little quiet.

Rodri - 6/10 - Helped his side dominate possession after coming on.

Marcos Llorente - 6/10 - Flawless on the ball and was also positive.

Thiago Alcantara - 5/10 - Looked strangely off, misplacing basic passes.

Pau Torres - N/A
