Italy predicted lineup vs Austria - Euro 2020
By Harry Symeou
Italy's transformation under Roberto Mancini has been clear for all to see at Euro 2020. Their 100% record in Group A may not have come as that big of a surprise to some onlookers however, and the freedom and style with which they've gone about their business has seen them emerge as one of the favourites for the tournament heading into the round of 16.
Their reward for winning Group A is a clash with Austria, who finished third in Group C, at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. A place in the last eight where they will meet the winners of Belgium versus Portugal is up for grabs, but having afforded playing time to some of his squad players versus Wales last weekend, Mancini has some decisions to make with regards to his starting XI.
Here is the starting XI the 56-year-old is likely to select.
1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) - Hasn't put a foot wrong in the tournament so far. A world class goalkeeper that every club in Europe would love to sign this summer.
Giovanni Di Lorenzo (RB) - Rested against Wales with a view to him deputising for the first-choice Alessandro Florenzi, who is currently struggling with injury.
Leonardo Bonucci (CB) - Came off at half-time last Sunday but is understood to be fit for the clash with Austria. With Giorgio Chiellini likely to miss out, Bonucci's experience at the back is invaluable.
Francesco Acerbi (CB) - The Lazio defender is the most likely to be called upon in Chiellini's absence. Other options include Inter's Alessandro Bastoni but Mancini will probably lean towards the 33-year-old for his experience.
Leonardo Spinazzola (LB) - One of the standout performers in the tournament so far. He gives Italy so much at both ends of the pitch, the prospect of his return to link up with Insigne on the left side is likely to cause the Austrian right-back nightmares.
2. Midfielders
Nicolo Barella (CM) - Has shown what a well-rounded footballer he is and his inclusion is key to balancing the three-man midfield.
Jorginho (CM) - Italy's tempo-setter or metronome, Jorginho is one of the first names on the team sheet and rightly so.
Marco Verratti (CM) - Leaving Manuel Locatelli out feels incredibly harsh but it just goes to show how much strength in-depth Italy possess. Verratti is Italy's standout midfielder and having returned to fitness, he simply must play.
3. Forwards
Domenico Berardi (RW) - His inclusion in the starting XI ahead of Federico Chiesa for the first two group games came as a surprise to many. However, his physical presence gives Italy an outlet should they wish to go long. Plus he's not a bad footballer either.
Ciro Immobile (ST) - Has two goals at the championships so far and is Italy's standout option at centre-forward. Does lots of the unselfish work up front that sometimes slips under the radar.
Lorenzo Insigne (LW) - Loves cutting inside onto his right foot and especially when he's got Spinazzola bombing up on the outside of him. The pair have combined brilliantly down that side so far.
