Japan go goal mad in 14-0 World Cup qualifying win over Mongolia
Regardless of what level you play football at, we have all been on the end of a hiding.
Even still, it is hard to imagine what sort of pain Mongolia must have been feeling on Tuesday after they suffered a 14-0 thumping at the hands of Japan in an actual World Cup qualifier.
Going into the game you would have been mad to beat against the Samurai Blue, who fielded the likes of Liverpool loanee Takumi Minamino, Eintracht Frankfurt's Daichi Kamada and former Southampton defender Maya Yoshida in their starting XI. Mongolia meanwhile, are ranked 190th in the world, below Djibouti, Vanuatu and Fiji.
The underdogs did not get off to the best of starts, with Minamino giving his side the lead inside 13 minutes. This was only the beginning as well, with four more goals arriving before half-time.
After the break things started to get silly. After holding out bravely for ten minutes, Yuya Osaka scored the second of his three goals to make it 6-0. This strike fired the starting pistol for a goal bonanza and with 90 minutes on the clock Japan were leading 11-0. Not content with holding onto their lead, the visitors went on to add three more strikes in second-half stoppage time.
The match stats were unsurprisingly as one-sided as the scoreline, with Mongolia enjoying just 20% possession, two attempts on goal and 196 passes. Japan on the other hand forced opposition goalkeeper Enkhtaivan Munkherdene into 11 saves and had 34 shots in total.
The victory continued Japan's unbeaten start to World Cup qualifying and also boosted their goal difference to an impressive 27 after just five games. If they go into their remaining fixtures in the same merciless fashion, you can be pretty confident that they will qualify for their seventh consecutive World Cup next summer.
