Josh Doig: Things to know about the Scottish full-back
By Ross Jackson
To attract the interest of one Premier League club you've got to be pretty special, so when you hear Hibernian's Josh Doig is being chased by about half of the English top flight, you can probably guess how good he looks.
Despite boasting just 20 senior appearances, the 18-year-old is on the wish list of some of England's biggest clubs - with Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea all in the running - while Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are also monitoring the youngster.
With Doig looking set for future stardom, let's take the opportunity to get ahead of the game and find out exactly who this talented teenager is.
1. Style of play
Scotland have developed a habit of producing brilliant left-backs, with Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Arsenal's Kieran Tierney both showcasing their talents in the Premier League.
And Doig's playing style isn't too dissimilar from his compatriots.
His lung-busting runs have become a feature of his play since emerging into the Hibs first team, while his energy means he's capable of completing his defensive duties along with providing an attacking outlet.
2. He was released by Hearts
As if Hibs aren't already rubbing their hands together with delight at the fact they boast one of the most talented young defenders in the league, the fact they took advantage of their local rivals in doing so is even better.
Doig signed for Hibs in 2019, but only once he'd been released by Edinburgh rivals Hearts while still in school.
That could prove to be quite an expensive mistake by the Jam Tarts.
3. What's his situation at Hibs?
While we're on the subject of him being expensive, just what is his position at Hibs?
The Scottish Premiership side are already rumoured to have set their asking price for the teenager, and unbelievably they're demanding just £1m - £1m for a teenager...when you say it out loud it does sound pretty ridiculous, but given the inflated prices in the modern game, it sounds like a bit of a bargain to us.
Doig still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Easter Road, so Hibs are certainly in no rush to sell. However, with their asking price already being named, it sounds as though they'd be willing to part ways should the right money be offered.
4. He's yet to play a full season in the top flight
This probably won't come as too much of a surprise considering he's only just old enough to go to the local shop and buy a beer (we would have said 'go to the pub' but, well, y'know...) but Roig is yet to play a full season in the top flight.
The 18-year-old spent last season on loan at Scottish League Two outfit Queen's Park where he made seven appearances.
Having remained at Easter Road this campaign, not only was he handed his debut back in August, he's also managed to cement his place in the starting XI, making 17 appearances in the Scottish Premiership
5. Can fill in at centre-back when needed
If Doig does choose to move to one of the aforementioned behemoths chasing his signature, game time will no doubt be limited in his first few years away from Hibernian, so the ability to fill in in positions others than his natural left-back berth will come in handy.
The teenager has made the left-back position his own in the Hibs starting XI this season, but he's also capable of filling in at centre-back when needed and played there on more than one occasion during his loan spell at Queen's Park.
6. Capped at international youth level
Doig received his maiden international call-up to the Scotland Under-18 squad in September 2019.
The Hibs left-back was subsequently handed his debut as Billy Stark's men triumphed 2-1 over Paraguay, experience which will no doubt prove invaluable if he's to one day make the step up to the senior squad and challenge the likes of Robertson and Tierney.
