Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai suffered a hamstring injury against Newcastle on New Year's Day and will miss the club's next two games at least.

The Hungarian ace was taken off in the second half of the Reds' eventual 4-2 win at Anfield, which reinforced their place at the top of the Premier League table.

"I can confirm it's not a potential injury - it is an injury. Muscle, hamstring. But now we have to see," Klopp told reporters at his latest press conference.

"Dom is very positive, doesn't have a lot of pain but we have to wait a little bit. So, no chance obviously for Sunday, not for Wednesday. No.

"And then we will see, after that hopefully he might be back but we don't know."

The games Klopp was referring to are Liverpool's FA Cup third round clash with Arsenal on Sunday and the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham - their last fixture before a mini break affords Szoboszlai and his teammates 11 days of match respite.

Liverpool then travel to in-form Bournemouth and make the trip to Fulham for the second leg of their last four clash before hosting Chelsea at Anfield on the final day of the month.

Szoboszlai has made a huge impression at Liverpool after joining from RB Leipzig on a five-year deal last summer. The 23-year-old's move cost the club around £60m - they paid the release clause in his contract in full - but he's repaid a chunk of that fee with some extremely promising performances in a new-look midfield.

Although the timing of Szoboszlai's injury is not ideal - Liverpool have lost Mohamed Salah to AFCON duty with Egypt - they were at least able to welcome back fellow summer signing Alexis Mac Allister against Newcastle.

The Argentine World Cup winner had missed six games after sustaining a nasty gash to his knee during Liverpool's clash with Crystal Palace, but was afforded 15 minutes against Newcastle as Salah inspired the Reds to victory despite having a first-half penalty saved by Martin Dubravka.
