Jurgen Klopp vs Eddie Howe: Complete head-to-head record
- Jurgen Klopp set to meet Eddie Howe twice in 2023/24
- Klopp has excellent record against the Newcastle manager
- A Howe-led side hasn't taken points off Liverpool since 2017
Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed plenty of success against the vast majority of managers he's faced up against in the Premier League.
The German's Reds recently sat alongside Manchester City as the division's supreme force, lifting the Premier League title in 2019/20. Hoping to oversee a project similar in scale to Klopp's on Merseyside is Eddie Howe, who's working wonders at Newcastle having guided the club into the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
Backed by a unlimited flow of Saudi cash, the booming potential for Newcastle is off the charts. Howe has achieved plenty in a short space of time on Tyneside and one of his objectives moving forward will be to improve his current head-to-head record against Klopp.
Right now, it doesn't make for pretty reading.
Jurgen Klopp vs Eddie Howe H2H record
1. Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth - October 2015
The first meeting between these two managers arrived in an EFL Cup fourth-round tie at the start of Klopp's Liverpool tenure.
Nathaniel Clyne's 17th-minute strike proved to be the difference as Liverpool progressed into the quarter-finals at Bournemouth's expense.
The Reds would go on to reach the final, where they were beaten by Man City on penalties.
2. Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool - April 2016
Liverpool edged out Bournemouth 1-0 in their first-ever Premier League meeting at the start of the 2015/16 season, which meant it wasn't until the following April that Klopp first met Howe in a Premier League game.
Howe's Cherries had surprised many after earning promotion from the Championship the season prior. However, there was an element of comfort to Liverpool's victory on the south coast as Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge scored in quick succession just before half-time.
Josh King bagged a late consolation for the hosts.
3. Bournemouth 4-3 Liverpool - December 2016
Howe's sole victory over Klopp arrived in their third meeting and Bournemouth were forced to pull off a mini miracle in order to do so.
The Reds were coasting at the Vitality, racing into 2-0 and 3-1 leads. Liverpool's advantage was two heading into the final 15 minutes, but a Bournemouth response conjured from thin air left the contest at 3-3 with 12 minutes to go.
Momentum swung in an instant, with Nathan Ake's winner sparking scenes of delirium on the south coast.
4. Liverpool 2-2 Bournemouth - April 2017
It was another late show for the Cherries as King struck in the 87th minute to dent Liverpool's Champions League hopes.
The Reds responded well to going a goal behind with Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi getting on the scoresheet either side of the half-time interval.
The hosts peppered Artur Boruc's goal in hope of sealing the victory, but the Pole stood firm which allowed King to secure Bournemouth's first-ever point at Anfield.
5. Bournemouth 0-4 Liverpool - December 2017
Howe's success against Klopp was short-lived. Normality resumed in 2017/18 as Liverpool thrashed Bournemouth in their first meeting of the campaign.
The Reds dazzled going forward in an emphatic 4-0 triumph that highlighted their supreme credentials with Klopp's project moving through the gears.
6. Liverpool 3-0 Bournemouth - April 2018
Liverpool were once again relentless in the reverse fixture towards the end of the 2017/18 season. The Reds' imperious front three all got on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win over the Cherries.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also delivered a divine assist for Liverpool's second which was finished by the revelatory Mohamed Salah.
7. Bournemouth 0-4 Liverpool - December 2018
The goalscoring had been shared around in Liverpool's two victories over Bournemouth the season prior, but this rout was all about Salah.
The Egyptian star scored a hat-trick in Liverpool's 4-0 rout on the south coast which moved them to the top of the Premier League table. It was Salah's second hat-trick for the Reds with Klopp's side extending their unbeaten run in the league to 17 games.
The Cherries were overwhelmed for the third game running.
8. Liverpool 3-0 Bournemouth - February 2019
Poor old Howe. Another procession for Klopp's Reds.
Liverpool once again swatted aside Bournemouth with little to no resistance as their title charge continued with a 3-0 victory over the Cherries. The game was over as a contest just after half-time as Salah scored Liverpool's third following first half strikes from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.
9. Bournemouth 0-3 Liverpool - December 2019
Stop! Stop! They're already dead! Liverpool's victory at the Vitality in December 2019 meant the Reds had beaten Bournemouth by an aggregate score of 17-0 over five games since they were held by Howe's Cherries at Anfield.
The hosts failed to register a single shot on target in this defeat as Salah scored again on the south coast.
10. Liverpool 2-1 Bournemouth - March 2020
Oh my god...a competitive contest. Howe used to pray for times like this.
The runaway leaders were given a scare by the visitors just before the Covid-induced halt to the 2019/20 season which Liverpool were dominating. Callum Wilson scored Bournemouth's first goal against the Reds in almost three years after nine minutes, but the champions-elect responded swiftly and led 2-1 by the 33rd minute.
Mane and Salah helped turn things around for the hosts, who held onto their lead in the second half.
11. Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle - December 2021
Bournemouth's demise to the second tier saw Howe depart the club at the end of the drawn-out 2019/20 season. However, his next managerial venture was an exciting one on Tyneside following Newcastle's ownership change.
However, it'd take some time for their Saudi-backed project to kick into gear. The first couple of months were tough for Howe's Magpies, although they showed signs of life at Anfield in this defeat.
12. Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool - April 2022
Excitement was starting to build at St James' Park over the future of Howe's Newcastle and this trip was an especially tough one for a title-chasing Liverpool side.
However, they were able to maintain the pressure on Man City by edging past the Magpies on Tyneside. A rare Naby Keita goal sealed all three points against the Reds as Klopp kept up his excellent head-to-head record against Howe.
13. Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle - August 2022
Newcastle's performance at Anfield at the start of the 2022/23 season showcased the direction they were heading in with Howe at the helm.
Club-record signing Alexander Isak sparkled on Merseyside as he gave the visitors the lead before half-time. Roberto Firmino levelled proceedings on the hour, but it looked as if Howe would gain his first point against Klopp since April 2017.
However, young Fabio Carvalho struck in the eighth minute of stoppage time to sink the Magpies and secure a 2-1 win for the hosts.
14. Newcastle 0-2 Liverpool - February 2023
For the first time of the Klopp era, Liverpool went into a contest against a Howe-led side as the underdogs. 2022/23 was difficult for the Reds, while Newcastle looked set for a top-four finish.
However, this contest couldn't have gone much worse for the Magpies, who let Darwin Nunez score an actual goal before Nick Pope was sent off after 22 minutes.
Newcastle were already 2-0 down and Pope's dismissal all but ended their chances of a revival.
15. Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool - August 2023
It's takes a while for some romances to truly blossom. If they weren't smitten before, Liverpool fans were truly sold on Darwin Nunez after his match-winning cameo at St James' Park here.
With his side a goal and a player down after Vigil van Dijk's red card, the Uruguayan striker entered the action in the 77th minute and struck twice, including a 93rd-minute winner, to cap a masterful display from Klopp and his team.
16. Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle - January 2024
The 4-2 scoreline doesn't really reflect just how dominant Liverpool were in this victory over Newcastle.
Racking up an xG of 7.11, the Reds had a penalty saved as Martin Dubravka denied Salah, but the Egyptian still scored twice and set up another.
Salah grabbed the opener in the second half and while efforts from Isak and Sven Botman kept the Magpies in the contest, Klopp's side got over the line thanks to goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo.
