Juventus director says new Cristiano Ronaldo contract is 'not on the agenda'

Juventus director Fabio Paratici has insisted that extending Cristiano Ronaldo's contract is currently 'not on the agenda' following the club's shock Champions League last 16 exit at the hands of Porto.

The Old Lady signed Ronaldo in a lucrative €100m deal in 2018 in a bid to win the Champions League for the first time since 1996.

Although Juventus' Serie A success has continued since the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's arrival, the club have never progressed further than the quarter-finals of the competition with Ronaldo in the team.

Ronaldo's contract expires in 2022, but Paratici insisted a new deal for the Portuguese international is not a current priority.

"Fortunately, there's a year left on his contract; we have time eventually to discuss it with him, the Juventus director told Sky Italia. "Let's just say it's not on the agenda right now.

"Cristiano has his career in his hands. Always with these great players you know that when they decide to end their experience with one team and move on to another experience, it's they who decide, and you have to respect that decision. We have to consider how he will feel in order to continue or not once his contract expires."

Juventus exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage in 2019 after suffering a shock defeat to Ajax, and surprise exits at the hands of Lyon and ten-man Porto followed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

In addition to their poor European showings in recent seasons, the club currently sit ten points off Inter at the Serie A summit and are in danger of not being crowned champions of Italy for the first time in a decade.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus are plotting a rebuild, and there will be discussions with Ronaldo regarding his contract situation. Weston McKennie, Wojciech Szczesny, Federico Chiesa and Matthijs de Ligt are already considered part of the rebuilding project, while Aaron Ramsey could depart.
