Kalvin Phillips Facing Up to Six Weeks Out After Suffering Shoulder Injury
By Adam Aladay
Leeds United have confirmed that midfielder Kalvin Phillips could be out for up to six weeks after sustaining a shoulder injury.
The 24-year-old has played every minute of Premier League football possible so far this term, most recently playing the full 90 minutes during the 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday. In a tight contest, Raul Jimenez's strike - which went in off Phillips after he tried to block the shot - proved to be the difference.
But Leeds have now confirmed on their official website that the Englishman will be unavailable for as long as six weeks due to a shoulder injury, however he will not need surgery.
A statement on the club's website read: "Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips suffered a shoulder injury in last night's Premier League defeat to Wolves at Elland Road.
"Whilst we are pleased to confirm that surgery is not required, the Leeds born England International could still face up to six weeks on the sidelines. Kalvin began his rehab at Thorp Arch this morning and will be working hard with the medical team to return to action as soon as possible."
News of Phillips' absence will be a major blow for both Marcelo Bielsa and the player himself. After an outstanding season in the Championship last term, Phillips was rewarded with an England call-up in September and made his debut in the Nations League draw with Denmark. Since then, he has started two of the Three Lions' last three matches.
At club level, Phillips has made a strong start to life in the Premier League, putting in a series of composed and confident displays at the base of the midfield. His performances have helped United pick up seven points from their opening five league games, with the thrilling 1-1 draw with Manchester City an obvious highlight so far.
Phillips' injury will be a real cause for concern for Bielsa, given the club's lack of depth in the defensive midfield position. Youngster Mateusz Bogusz had been deployed during the Carabao Cup defeat to Hull City, but he has since joined UD Logrones on loan for the season.
