Kylian Mbappe hauled off at half-time of Monaco draw as chaotic PSG ending continues

Kylian Mbappe was substituted after only 45 minutes of Paris Saint-Germain's 0-0 draw at AS Monaco on Friday night and watched the second half in the stands with his mother.

Mbappe will leave PSG at the end of the season when his contract expires, though 90min understands he is set to hand back up to €80m in loyalty bonuses and other add-ons, so the club will not be out of pocket and have the requisite finances to buy a replacement.

The 25-year-old is in talks over a summer move to Real Madrid, though the two parties have not yet come to an agreement on a contract. Should he join Los Blancos, Mbappe is expected to take a substantial pay-cut, but could make up the deficit in bonuses, signing-on fees and commercial benefits from playing at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mbappe's Ligue 1 form with PSG has taken a hit since news of his departure became public. He was substituted in the 65th minute of a 1-1 draw at home to Rennes last week - at which point his side were losing - and he was hauled off at half-time of Friday's 0-0 draw at former club Monaco and replaced by Randal Kolo Muani.

Instead of heading to the bench, Mbappe changed back into normal clothes and watched the second half from the stands with his mother at Stade Louis II. He then joined his teammates on the pitch at full-time.

Speaking to the press post-match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique explained his decision to bring Mbappe off so prematurely.

"I have been in football long enough, you should know that everything is important in this kind of club," Enrique said. "Sooner rather than later, we will play without Mbappe so I'm looking for the best option for the team.

"Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong. We need to get used to it [playing without Mbappe]. I will do what is best for my team. I don't want to create controversy, it's my decision."

Enrique later added he was unaware that Mbappe watched the second half from the stands.

The result means PSG are now 12 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table, though that gap will be reduced to nine if second-placed Brest win against Le Havre on Sunday. Mbappe remains the division's top scorer with 21 goals, well clear of Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette in second with 12.
