Guardiola started his Premier League journey with six straight wins, but his first City side were so often ruthlessly exposed on the counter-attack and won just seven of their next 16 games. Instead, they were pegged back by a Shkodran Mustafi header at the start of the second half.

Guardiola's side then had one last hope of mounting a late title charge as they took on the league leaders at Stamford Bridge, The contest under the lights started with goals at both ends as Chelsea took a 2-1 lead into half-time. City had the better of the second half, coming close to equalising when Vincent Kompany hit the crossbar, but the hosts held on for a crucial three points on their way to the title.

Defeat in west London was City's last of the 2016/17 season, but they'd only muster a third-place finish in Guardiola's maiden campaign at the helm.

Pep will take solace in knowing his side's current malaise has arrived before the halfway point in the 2023/24 season. Still, with the fixtures arriving thick and fast over Christmas and City jetting off to Saudi Arabia for the Club World Cup, a sustained decline will surely end their hopes of a fourth-straight league title.
