Lazio 3-2 Crotone: Felipe Caicedo stunner secures dramatic win for Biancocelesti
Lazio were made to work for a win over basement side Crotone at Stadio Olimpico, but got there in the end thanks to a wonderful late finish from Felipe Caicedo.
Simone Inzaghi's team were reeling from defeat to Bologna last time out and it initially looked as if they were about to take their frustrations out on their struggling opponents. In an afternoon graced with a number of glorious finishes, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic got on the end of a Radu cross, and arrowed a controlled volley beyond Alex Cordaz.
But while Crotone may be heading out of Serie A this season, they weren't going down without a fight in Rome.
They responded well to Milinkovic-Savic's opener, and soon had something to celebrate themselves when Nigerian striker Simy took matters into his own hands.
The 28-year-old has been their player of the season so far, and he left Francesco Acerbi looking rather silly with some nice footwork, before sending an impossible finish beyond Pepe Reina with the outside of his boot.
The goal came against the run of play, and Euro-chasing Lazio looked as if they had been wronged.
They came again and regained their lead via Luis Alberto, but relinquished it once more after the break when Vedat Muriqi brought down Junior Messias in the area,
No question who was taking the penalty, as up stepped Simy to fire in his 11th of the season.
But there was to be one more twist, and it was a cruel one for Crotone, who had given it their all to claw their way back into the game.
The final moment of magic came from Caicedo, when he appeared to accidentally block a shot from team-mate Gonzalo Escalante...but responded in style.
He might have been in for an earful from the midfielder, had he not teed himself up and volleyed across Cordaz to secure a much-needed win for Lazio.
