Leeds United have agreed terms with Marcelo Bielsa over a new contract with the Whites boss set to sign before the Premier League season begins.

El Loco masterminded the club's long awaited return to the top flight last campaign, earning heartfelt devotion from Leeds' supporters in the process. Bielsa's side led the Championship for much of the 2019/2020 season, eventually finishing 10 points ahead of second placed West Brom to clinch the title.

The former Argentina manager is set to be rewarded for this success with a new contract. Bielsa's short term deal expired over the summer but he has been involved in pre-season training and also had an input on ongoing infrastructure changes at Elland Road.

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear told Sky Sports (via the Telegraph) that it was a question of when, not if the 65-year-old would pen new terms with the club.

"I just need find an appropriate window to get the paper in front of him and for him to sign it,” said Kinnear. “We don't foresee any challenges."

"We feel confident. Marcelo is absolutely focused on training and preparations for the season,” he added.

"It’s a bit like last season when everyone was nervous about the contract and really it is about getting time for him to focus on signing it when what he wants to talk about is changes at Thorp Arch, changes at Elland Road, strengthening the team and strengthening his backroom staff.

"We have conversations daily and it tends to be about the minutiae of the preparations for the season rather than his contract. I know that makes fans feel nervous, it makes me feel a little nervous but I don’t think there is any reason to be."

Leeds' long wait for Premier League action will come to an end on 12 September when they face off against Liverpool on the opening day.
