Leeds Win Championship Title After Brentford Lose to Stoke

Leeds United have secured the Championship title after third-placed Brentford slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Stoke City.

The Whites do not play until Sunday, but have already had their promotion and league champions status confirmed without yet kicking a ball over the weekend.

Leeds mathematically sealed promotion on Friday evening after second-placed West Brom lost 1-0 to relegation-threatened Huddersfield.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were handed another favour by a team struggling towards the lower reaches of the Championship, as Stoke's victory over Brentford leaves the Whites uncatchable at the league summit.

A draw would have been enough for Brentford to move into the automatic promotion places, having put together a stunning eight-game winning streak since football returned to eat away at West Brom's points advantage.

However, the Bees remain third after Lee Gregory's tap in secured a 1-0 win for Stoke. Brentford will need to better West Brom's result against QPR in their final game of the season on Wednesday evening at home to bottom side Barnsley if they are to finish second and guarantee themselves a spot in next season's Premier League.

Defeat leaves Brentford six points behind Leeds with one game remaining. The Whites are now five points ahead of West Brom, and can top off a pretty perfect weekend with victory over Derby on Sunday.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have comfortably been the strongest side in the Championship this campaign, overcoming last year's end of season stutter and playoff heartache to top the pile in the second tier.

Promotion brings an end to Leeds' prolonged 16-year absence from the top flight. The Yorkshire outfit have not played Premier League football since their relegation in 2004; Tony Blair was Prime Minister, Air Hostess by Busted had just entered the UK charts and no one had the faintest idea what Zoom was.
