Ligue 1 Golden Boot: History & all previous winners

Ligue 1 has housed some of the best strikers the world has ever seen, with France being one of the major hotbeds of talent in the world of football.

Scoring more goals than anyone else in your position is a massive confidence booster and while team accolades should always be the most important, any good striker will tell you they are selfish in nature. It's the ultimate honour for any striker in any league around the world.

Here is the full history of Ligue 1's Golden Boot award, including all of the previous winners and how some modern players rank overall.

When did Ligue 1 start recording top scorers?

The French First Division got underway back in 1932 and has been running in largely the same format ever since.

They began recording who the top scorer is right from the beginning, although there is a gap in the records between 1939 and 1945 when no official football took place due to the Second World War.

Some huge names have had the honour of being the top scorer in Ligue 1 over the years, such as Kylian Mbappe, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Karim Benzema, Djibril Cisse, Olivier Giroud and Just Fontaine.

Who has been Ligue 1 top scorer most often?

There are three players who have the incredible honour of being the Ligue 1 top scorer on five separate occasions, with some awards even being shared.

The players in question are Argentinian forwards Carlos Bianchi and Delio Onnis, who were scoring goals in abundance during the 1970s and 1980s. Bianchi is perhaps the most impressive given he reached five quicker and never had to share a golden boot.

The third player is French striker Jean-Pierre Papin, who has a separate claim to be the most impressive given none of his prizes were shared and they also came in five consecutive seasons between 1988/89 and 1991/92 with Marseille.

It's looking very likely Kylian Mbappe will be the top scorer in 2022/23 which would be his fifth Ligue 1 golden boot and his fifth in a row, having won it every season since 2018/19 with just one being shared.

Who is the all-time Ligue 1 top scorer?

This is a record that belongs to the aforementioned Delio Onnis.

Onnis scored an incredible 299 times in 449 Ligue 1 appearances with goals coming for Reims, Monaco, Tours and Toulon. He is 44 goals ahead of Bernard Lacombe, who is second in the charts.

The highest current Ligue 1 player on the chart is Mbappe who is sat on 163 goals. He would likely need to stay at PSG for the rest of his career to take that record away from Onnis.

Who has the most goals in one Ligue 1 season?

While Onnis, Bianchi and Mbappe steal the limelight for a number of reasons, it's Josip Skoblar who holds the record for most goals scored in a singular Ligue 1 campaign.

The Yugoslavian was top scorer for three consecutive seasons at the start of the 1970s with Marseille. In the first season, he netted an incredible 44 goals in 36 games.
