Liverpool have now - incredibly - found their Premier League groove and find themselves in with a chance of securing a top-four finish.

The spirit of the football-mad city was highlighted when Diogo Jota pounced on Lucas Moura's loose pass and netted just moments after Tottenham assumed they had produced a comeback of amazing proportions.

They then followed it up with narrow 1-0 wins against west London pair Fulham and Brentford.

Are Liverpool really in arm's reach of Champions League qualification or have they left it too late? They'll yearn until the end, that's for sure.

Liverpool form guide

Jurgen Klopp has been claimed to be suffering from the 'seventh-season syndrome' and on face value, you'd have to agree. Liverpool were close to winning four honours last season, but this season has been quite the opposite.

Many inside Anfield believe Klopp is not the problem, but instead their shortcomings in the midfield department - an area the German will look to address this summer.

It seems like a switch in the Liverpool camp has been flicked and the Reds of old have come out of hiding. They are the only ones contending with City in the form table which is reminiscent of the end of last season when they were light years ahead of the rest.

A resounding 6-1 win over Leeds began their change in fortunes, which quickly became apparent with tight wins at home to Nottingham Forest and away at West Ham. Klopp's Reds then took part in the game-of-the-season contender against Tottenham, where Jota provided the goods in the dying embers to cancel out Richarlison's dramatic equaliser and pigeon-inspired celebrations. Their simple but effective 1-0 wins against Fulham and Brentford combined with Manchester United's loss at Brighton have boosted their hopes of achieving the unthinkable.

Two former Premier League champions enduring difficult seasons will meet at the King Power Stadium, the home of Leicester City.

Likely to be involved in a final-day relegation dogfight, Dean Smith - who was appointed to keep Leicester afloat - will offer Klopp a new challenge and was in charge of the Aston Villa outfit who put the Reds to the sword in their startling 7-2 win back in 2020.

Unai Emery has made Aston Villa one of the very toughest teams to beat since his appointment earlier in the season.

Liverpool will have the psychological upper-hand on their opponents given their recent head-to-head record, barring a certain 7-2 scoreline that will remain in Premier League folklore for a long time. Since, though, Villa have lost four times on the spin.

Many teams will spend their summer time off to reflect, to work out where and why things went wrong, and these two sides are in that category.

Fixtures against top-half sides Fulham and Brighton come just before this one for Southampton, who are currently rooted to the foot of the table.

The departing Roberto Firmino scored within six minutes of their last meeting, but Liverpool's fast start was cancelled out three minutes later by Che Adams. Uruguayan marksman Darwin Nunez then bagged a first-half brace which secured the home side the win.
