Liverpool 1-1 Man City: Things we learned from Premier League title race showdown

In what could be the last chapter in the book of managerial tussles between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, Liverpool and Manchester City didn't disappoint.

Sunday's huge Premier League title race showdown at Anfield saw Alexis Mac Allister's second-half penalty cancel out John Stones' opener, leaving Arsenal laughing at the top of the table after the Gunners beat Brentford the day before.

There were sub-plots galore to dissect in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw. Here are 90min's top observations from the weekend's entertaining tie.

Liverpool's youngsters do the job again

Virgil van Dijk's usual centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate wasn't fit enough for a spot in the matchday squad, handing just a sixth Premier League start of the campaign to 21-year-old Jarell Quansah.

The young Englishman looked far from overawed by the wealth of attacking talent in City's ranks, helping keep Erling Haaland quiet roughly a year after he had lined up in League One for Bristol Rovers against Forest Green Rovers during a loan spell.

Liverpool's other youngsters showed plenty of desire, too.

Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was comfortable between the sticks, while right-back Conor Bradley showed enthusiasm to push into the final third, even though the end product often evaded him. Harvey Elliott was also busy on the right wing, pressing vociferously to give City little room to manoeuvre.

Erling Haaland's frustration boils over

There's no barren run at Anfield for Erling Haaland to worry about given he did score on his first appearance at the stadium while at RB Salzburg in the Champions League.

However, the Norwegian behemoth has now gone two league games without netting at the home of the Reds, with chances evading him in Sunday's meeting. Haaland managed only one shot on target, lifting an effort straight at Kelleher after being shown wide by Virgin van Dijk.

He wasn't the only player to lose his rag, but the sight of Haaland getting into a scuffle with Joe Gomez deep into second-half stoppage time hinted at the striker's frustration after a difficult afternoon.

The stats point in Man City's direction for fourth straight title...

Man City were tested in all departments on Sunday and, while they're a point behind both Arsenal and Liverpool after the draw, Pep Guardiola's side are in an excellent position to go on and retain their Premier League title.

It's the Cityzens who have the greatest chance of finishing first at the end of the season, according to Opta's latest number-crunching.

City have already won three titles on the bounce and are seeking a fourth to set a new record for prolonged dominance. With no tests the size of a trip to Anfield on the horizon imminently, the omens look good for the mechanical City.

...but moments of madness could cost Pep Guardiola

However, no supercomputer could have predicted the moment of madness that dragged Liverpool back into the game and ultimately earned the hosts a point.

Ederson's wild swing at Nathan Ake's under-hit pass saw Darwin Nunez hit the deck, allowing Mac Allister to fire in from the spot in the absence of Mohamed Salah, who hadn't yet entered proceedings.

There's little room for human error in a title race and, for all their precise brilliance, City have been known to produce serious lapses in concentration at the worst possible moments.

Should a similar blunder cause them to slip up in the next few months, it could open the door for Liverpool or Arsenal to stretch their lead or fight back into the title scrap.
