Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has signed a new long-term contract with the club, ending any speculation about his future in Bavaria following transfer links with Manchester United.

Bayern announced the deal on Wednesday afternoon, confirming that Tel is now tied to the Bundesliga giants until the summer of 2029. The 18-year-old talent had previously joined from Rennes in 2022.

"This contract extension means a lot to me. I've already learnt a lot at Bayern, both on and off the pitch. Munich has become a home for me and my family, and the fans are also very important to me. I can't be the player I am without them," Tel told fcbayern.com.

"When you play for Bayern, you always want to win every trophy. I want to score and set up goals, play with heart and energy for Bayern, and give everything for this club and its fans."

Tel had only just turned 17 when Bayern agreed a package with Rennes worth nearly €30m, having only made ten senior appearances. He has gone on to play 58 times in all competitions for Bayern in the almost two years since, scoring 13 goals.

But it wasn't certain that Tel would stay in Munich. A report in Germany last month suggested that United and two other unnamed Premier League clubs had been in touch with Bayern to enquire about the teenager's potential availability.

A possible parting of ways was then alluded to when Tel’s agent suggested a few days later that, while Bayern remained the long-term ideal, assurances were being sought and other options would be considered if the player’s camp were not on the same page as the club.

"Mathys loves the club, the fans, he wants to be important and win all the trophies here with a strong team," Tel's agent said later in February. "Sometimes you just need to feel like you're on the same path. We'll see very soon, but I'm confident. But if not, we have to consider all options because Mathys knows that he is valuable and will be a top player."

Now, with a new deal that promises to see Tel celebrate his 25th birthday in Bayern colours, it seems clear that those assurances were received.
