Man Utd are considering signing Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer when his contract expires at the end of the season, 90min has learned.

Sommer, who currently plays for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, turns 34 later this month, and United are in talks about a potential move. Sommer is able to agree a deal with another club from January, within the last six months of his contract.

There has been interest in the player since last summer when Sommer was seen as a back up option to a first choice goalkeeper. 90min understands this is likely to remain the case given potential departures of existing back up options, with a decision on a long-term number one also due to be taken.

United and manager Erik ten Hag have for the duration of the season so far chosen David de Gea as the club's first choice, though the Spaniard is himself out of contract next summer.

Doubts over De Gea's position in the team have been bubbling under the surface for several months, especially since Ten Hag took charge at Old Trafford, and he remains one of the club's highest earning players. It is not expected De Gea will continue on his existing terms, even while United have an option to extend his agreement by a further year.

The two parties are currently working out between them what the next step is, though there are some indications a departure may be on the cards next summer. It's hoped that even if De Gea does leave United, the parting of ways would be mutual and amicable after what would be 12 years in the north west.

United have been interested in Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa for a number of months, scouting the player on several occasions this season.

Regardless of any decision on De Gea and a new first choice, United need to consider other fresh arrivals in goal as it's also considered likely that current back up Martin Dubravka will be returning to parent club Newcastle when his loan expires at the end of the season. A decision also has to be taken on Dean Henderson, who is on loan at Nottingham Forest.

90min understands Henderson does not want to return to United, even after his loan spell, though there is no buy option in his loan deal with Forest. United are hopeful his spell in Nottingham will help generate interest from potential buyers.
