An unconvincing winning run had seen Manchester United climb up the Premier League table, but Erik ten Hag's side have since been brought back down to earth.

This is a sub-par United outfit that already looks to be coming towards the end of another cycle with Ten Hag at the helm. The promise of 2022/23 has been dashed in an instant, and the ambiguity which surrounds the club at the very top has filtered down to the pitch.

Ten Hag must oversee a big response in midweek after Saturday's hapless display at Newcastle, although the Dutchman is unlikely to be aided by any injury returns.

Here's how United could line up against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

GK: Andre Onana - Despite his Champions League woes, Onana is starting to impress in thePremier League and the underlying metrics suggest he's been one of the league's best-performing goalkeepers so far.

RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka - Diogo Dalot hasn't enjoyed the best of campaigns, and Wan-Bissaka seems to be at the forefront of Ten Hag's right-back thinking after recovering from injury.

CB: Harry Maguire - Newcastle would've scored a few more if it wasn't for Maguire on Saturday.

CB: Luke Shaw - Shaw's return has undoubtedly aided the Red Devils, and he impressed at centre-back at the weekend. He and Maguire were United's best two players at St. James' Park.

LB: Sergio Reguilon - The Spaniard has featured sparingly since returning to the fold, but he could be included in the XI on Wednesday with Dalot dropping out.

DM: Sofyan Amrabat - It's hardly been a prosperous start for Amrabat, but Scott McTominay's recent malaise means the Moroccan could come back into Ten Hag's side on Wednesday.

DM: Kobbie Mainoo - Mainoo earned himself a run in the side after starring at Everton. The teenager plays with more courage than the vast majority of the United squad.

RM: Antony - The Brazilian was never worth the fee United paid for him, but he's key to the Red Devils' attacking balance. Marcus Rashford misses out given his woeful run of form.

AM: Bruno Fernandes - Ten Hag will be leaning on Fernandes to produce the moments he requires in the final third. His duel with Moises Caicedo could be crucial in determining Wednesday's victor.

LM: Alejandro Garnacho - The overhead kick extraordinaire has produced a couple of outstanding moments since the international break and is one of few players that deserves to keep his place in the team.

ST: Rasmus Hojlund - With Anthony Martial offering little at St. James' Park, raw summer arrival Hojlund is a sure bet to return to the starting XI on Wednesday.
