Man Utd predicted lineup vs Galatasaray - Champions League
- Man Utd were beaten 4-3 by Bayern Munich in their first Champions League game of the season
- Erik ten Hag has a myriad of defensive injuries to juggle, particularly at left-back
- United have lost two of their last three matches at Old Trafford
Manchester United's first Champions League game at Old Trafford in 18 months is up against Turkish giants Galatasaray on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils, then under the stewardship of Ralf Rangnick, lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of a last-16 tie in March 2022. To capture the passage of time, Juan Mata came off the bench for United during that defeat.
After a bonkers 4-3 loss against Bayern Munich for their first European game of the season, here's the side that Erik ten Hag may send out to get a win on home turf under the lights this Tuesday.
Man Utd predicted lineup vs Galatasaray (4-2-3-1)
GK: Andre Onana - Inter's former shot-stopper presided over eight clean sheets during last season's run to the Champions League final - an unrivalled figure in the competition.
RB: Victor Lindelof - The glut of defensive injuries that have besieged United this season could force Lindelof over to right-back, a role he has filled on occasion over the years.
CB: Raphael Varane - A crucial pillar in the backline; Manchester United have lost the last five matches which Varane has missed.
CB: Jonny Evans - The 35-year-old could make his first Champions League appearance in a decade. Evans was in the United team when Galatasaray last visited Old Trafford in 2012. So was Paul Scholes.
LB: Diogo Dalot - While he may not be a completely natural fit on the left of defence, Dalot may have to shift across the backline if Sergio Reguilon is unavailable to prevent another awkward outing for Sofyan Amrabat.
CM: Casemiro - Out of sheer stubbornness, Casemiro forced his way to a Champions League brace against Bayern despite defeat in United's European bow this season.
CM: Sofyan Amrabat - Last season's Europa Conference League finalist lost each of his first five appearances in the Champions League. Amrabat has only ever won a single match (back in 2017) in Europe's premier club competition.
AM: Mason Mount - The man who created the only goal in the 2021 Champions League final for Chelsea is still waiting for his first European appearance in United's colours.
RW: Bruno Fernandes - When Fernandes last appeared in the Champions League (2021/22) he finished as the season's leading assist provider in the competition.
ST: Rasmus Hojlund - While at Sturm Graz, the prolific Austrian author Gerhard Roth dubbed Hojlund 'The Hellhound' but sadly passed away before the striker made his debut for the club.
LW: Marcus Rashford - Only the legendary Ruud van Nistelrooy (87 minutes per goal) can boast a better scoring ratio in the Champions League for United than Rashford (112).
