Man Utd set to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan before transfer deadline
- United are looking for cover for injured left backs Luke Shaw & Tyrell Malacia
- Club had targeted Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, but move has stalled
- Reguilon seen as cost-effective solution as Sofyan Amrabat is also pursued
Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon on loan, 90min understands.
United have switched their attention to the Spaniard after earlier this week targeting Chelsea's Marc Cucurella, seeking a new left back as short-term cover in the squad following long-term injuries to both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw. United do not have a recognised and fit senior left back, with Diogo Dalot played in the position at the weekend against Nottingham Forest.
The largely untested academy product Alvaro Fernandez is also at the club, but may yet leave on loan for regular first team football before the transfer deadline.
Talks were progressing over Cucurella but Chelsea's request of a significant loan fee, tied in with the fact Cucurella played in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, has meant United have looked down their list of alternatives. United are looking at the option of potentially sending the player they sign back to their parent club in January but players are not able to play for three clubs in one season.

Cucurella, now he has represented Chelsea this season, could not feature for a third club this season presuming United play him for a short period and decide to cut the loan short in early 2024.
United's offer for Reguilon is on a season-long loan basis but it's understood a break clause in January is likely to exist for both United and Spurs.
Reguilon provides United with a cost-effective solution and while Cucurella was the priority target for the position, he does have extensive top level experience at a variety of clubs. United's priority before the deadline is to sign Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, and as 90min earlier reported, they are negotiating with the Serie A sign over a loan deal with purchase obligation.
The lesser cost of a deal for Reguilon in comparison to Cucurella provides United with more wiggle room in their negotiations for Amrabat, and it is expected that deals will progress for both players before the deadline on Friday at 11pm. Reguilon has been granted permission to travel for a medical with United with a view to completing the move.
Reguilon is not in Tottenham's plans under Ange Postecoglou and spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, making 12 appearances.
