Man Utd sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham
- Reguilon has joined on a season-long loan with a January break clause for both clubs
- United sought urgent left back cover after Shaw & Malacia injuries
- Reguilon unwanted by Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou
Manchester United have announced the signing of Tottenham full back Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan.
Reguilon joins as urgent cover at left-back following injuries to both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with both expected to be out for a number of weeks. United approached Spurs earlier this week over the possibility of a deal and quickly agreed a straight loan with no option to buy with Reguilon not in Ange Postecoglou's first team plans.
"In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down," Reguilon told club media. "Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.
"I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities."
Football director John Murtough added: "Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio. He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season.
"He has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away."
United are set to cover the Spaniard's wages during his time at Old Trafford but 90min understands both teams have the option to trigger a break clause in January - with United hopeful Shaw and Malacia will be fit for the remainder of the season.
Reguilon was not first choice cover for United - they had been speaking to Chelsea about signing Marc Cucurella on a similar deal - though that move stalled due to Cucurella representing Chelsea in the EFL Cup earlier this week. Chelsea's demand for a loan fee also made matters difficult, with Reguilon a cheaper alternative for United.
