There are some football games that are steeped in glorious history.
And then there's Manchester United vs Villarreal.
Each of their five previous meetings had ended in draws heading into this one, with only May's Europa League final not finishing 0-0.
Their four matches previous to that all finished as a draw. With no goals.

So it seemed for all the world that this too would be a goalless affair, right? That Unai Emery would come to Old Trafford in an attempt to grind out a result?
Well, not exactly. Villarreal came racing out of the blocks at Old Trafford, with former Bournemouth winger Arnaut Danjuma ripping apart Diogo Dalot and going close on several occasions - only to be routinely denied by the in-form David de Gea.
WHAT. A. SAVE!

United failed to get into the first half, and were fortunate to head into the break on level terms.
Bad first half from United there but luckily it’s a one off that we haven’t seen before
— j herbo stan (@CasaDupre) September 29, 2021
No balance or team play. Looking like a game where we can only get a goal from an individual moment.
— UtdFaithfuls (@UtdFaithfuls) September 29, 2021
If we're being honest, that was a poor, underwhelming first half from Man United.
Superb first half from Villarreal. By far the better team, but you do wonder whether these missed chances will come back to haunt Unai Emery's men. United are there for the taking.
— Jamie Kemble (@JamieKemble) September 29, 2021
But their luck ran out soon after the break. Danjuma had threatened plenty to open the scoring, and provided the assist for Paco Alcacer to give Villarreal a much deserved lead at Old Trafford.

Facing an eighth loss in 12 Champions League games in charge, the knives were understandably out for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer...

Should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer get the boot?
Manchester United go 1-0 down at home to Villarreal ?

This could be a fourth defeat in five matches for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side...#UCL
Again, no pattern of play, no exact playing style, no tactics, only vibes.
— SKG (@SKGUnited) September 29, 2021
Villarreal are playing basic possession game, and none of our players are bothering to press, this is coming from the coaching staff.
Not good enough !
Solskjaer has to get some discernible style going. Solo brilliance won't bail you out all the time, neither will the 'United way' or Fergie tactics
— Jude Summerfield (@judesummerfield) September 29, 2021
All the players are there, the end result has to be better than this, especially in the Champions League. This is turgid
It seemed as though the only way United were going to get back into the tie was through a moment of individual brilliance - and that's just what Alex Telles provided when he volleyed home a free-kick from Bruno Fernandes.
What a time to score your first Man Utd goal!

United saw more of the ball as the game went on, with substitute Edinson Cavani going close for the home side but couldn't find the net. Nevertheless, he was earning the plaudits on social media.
Cavani is a fucking legend man. He’s a few years away from his pension and I ain’t ever seen anyone work as hard as him.
— Jordan (@FourFourJordan) September 29, 2021
Cavani's so important to this team. He does the out-of-box no. 9 things Ronaldo doesn't do. The issue is, of course, fitting them both into a system which just isn't possible due to Sancho, Greenwood and Rashford. Nevertheless, Cavani's impact will be seen throughout the season.
— UtdArena (@utdarena) September 29, 2021
Cavani brought some much-needed energy to the game, but there was only ever going to be one man grabbing the headlines.
Fred's 95th-minute cross was bundled into Cristiano Ronaldo's path by Jesse Lingard, and he made no mistake, firing into the roof of Geronimo Rulli's net.

So United are off the mark in the Champions League this season, but after such an uninspiring performance for most of the night, where does Solskjaer go from here?
He's done it again ?

Look what it means to the Man Utd fans and players - and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - as Ronaldo delivers in the dying seconds.

— Josh Hobbs (@JoshAHobbs) September 29, 2021
No wonder Solskjaer looked like he had got away with one as he celebrated. He did. Villarreal should be disappointed not to have won, never mind lost. #mufc bailed out by a moment of brilliance and two world-class players at either end. Introductions of Lingard and Fred worked.
